Post Surgery Medical Care

On my way into work I spotted this poor pup laying in the grass of the interstate median.

Traffic was bad and no one seemed to notice him.  After taking the next exit to come back around I pulled off the highway to see what I could do.  He was obviously hurt and couldn't stand and was fighting to keep his eyes open. Being so early in the morning and knowing he needed medical attention all I could think to do was call and talk with Animal Control.  I stayed with him till Animal Control got there afraid he would get enough energy to go back into traffic.

Once they arrived they checked for a chip but he had none nor tags and they told me that without any identification and the likelihood he had broken bones, [beyond the visable injuries of an open gash on his hind leg and road rash on his rear quarter], the shelter would just put him to sleep if no one claimed him after the required 72 hour holding.

Despite being in obvious pain the dog was very responsive to affection and even perked up when we got him onto the stretcher.  I'm currently setup to adopt him once the 72 hours are up this coming Sunday but the shelter is only equiped to provide triage-like care.  Doing what they can to keep him comfortable so he will need immediate attention once he is released.

I was updated today by the ACC with the latest medical evaluation from their vet and he has a compound fracture of his rear leg, lacerations on his hind leg and very likely a broken pelvis.  Only a fully equiped veterinary clinic will be able to perform the xrays and other examination needed to treat him.  Rest, medication and multiple vet visits for treatment are highly likely and will cost far more than we can afford.  Unless I can be certain of his treatment he will likely face euthanization.

I hope the amount I am shooting for will cover his medical needs.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They believe he is not quite a year old and he has a sweet temperment.  Most bad tempered animals especially when injured will lash out when approached and especially when handled.  Chance, as we have come to name him, gave us a look of pleading and gave no fuss at all when he had to be lifted and moved onto the stretcher.

Thank you Danielle for recommending such an appropriate name for him!!

Good luck to Chance ... the pup with hope's of getting another.
