Help Native youth after sacred harvest destruction
Tax deductible
The Winnebago Tribe has a field of Indian corn that the youth of the Winnebago Academy bring up and learn to process. This is part of the ceremonies of the Winnebago people and passing on of our cultural knowledge. There is a Green Corn Dance to ensure a good harvest. The morning of August 22, 2019, it was discovered that the entire field was mowed down by a local white farmer. The students usually sell the corn to raise money for field trips, educational events, and scholarships. The students salvaged what little they could.
For Winnebago people, this is about more than just corn. The Winnebago Tribe has been making moves toward food sovereignty through educational cultural programs such as these. Most reservations are food deserts where processed canned and boxed food are the most accessible. This is about building a sustainable future and having something good for our young people.
Please donate to help recover the loss, and ensure our next Winnebago leaders.
