Halsey & Lewis is a black owned, brick and mortar, record shop in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. The business survived the pandemic, but alas can’t survive gentrification - it's being replaced with a pizza and wine shop...with only one week’s notice! Shopowners, Martin Brewer and Sonya Farrell require start up funds to secure and build out a new spot.
Firstly, deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and appreciation. I feel like George in the black version of “It’s a wonderful life”.
Started with an idea in 2016, we took over an unused shack on Lewis Avenue. The neighborhood embrace was immediate; Lulu’s, Joy, Thai, Khen, Ms. Willie, Darrell, Jobby, Super French, Rosie and countless others. In the black tradition of “Making A Way Out Of No Way”, the shop was built out of a personal vintage vinyl collection, goodwill, and a handshake.
Always about community; we started www.letsgetonthebus.org to take under served teens down to the Smithsonian’s NMAAH&C, and during the pandemic we gathered personal protective equipment to share with our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
Halsey & Lewis is one of the few black owned vinyl shops in the country. Help stop the erasure! We may be pushed out of this spot, but hope to find a new space to keep curating vintage vinyl, books and potions.
A new space to spotlight emerging designers, musicians, artists, community organizers, dj’s, and creators.
An “All things are Possible” space.
An "Any amount towards Justice" space.
A "Powered by Crystals" space.
A "Higher Frequencies" space.
A “Fazers on Stun" space.
Again, humbled and renewed by your support!
Yours truly in love and service,
Martin & Sonya
