In history, how much have the youth been a key driver for change? The Oromo youth around the globe are calling for your support, join the movement.

The first Oromo Youth Leadership Conference was organized in 2006. It resulted in the creation of the International Oromo Youth Association (IOYA). Every summer from 2006 to 2013, OYLC has brought together youth across the diaspora to discuss issues pertaining to Oromo communities and build leadership skills.

The Oromo Youth Leadership Conference (OYLC) is an international effort, involving more than 20 countries, to focus on issues pertaining to Oromo youth at large and how the youth can collectively contribute to advocacy on various platforms. Discussions will revolve around brainstorming and finding effective ways to teach and learn Oromo culture, identity improving communication, knowledge and information sharing, mass advocacy and research efforts to bridge the gap between Oromo youth in diaspora and at home in Oromiya. The goal behind OYLC is to form a strong network of youth in the diaspora and back home, enabling the youth to collaborate with other Oromo organizations to combat the issue of the underrepresentation of youth in the plight of the Oromo people.

To fulfill this mandate, the International Oromo Youth Association (IOYA) has developed a concept to revive the OYLC and to serve as an umbrella organization for all Oromo Youth Associations (OYA’s) and respective groups, seeing as the conference has been inactive for four years. Proposed for 2017, the conference will bring together youth from various backgrounds, with a diverse set of talents and ideologies, to discuss the issues affecting the diaspora and the Oromo plight, their effects on a global scale and finding effective ways of addressing these issues. The conference will also serve to highlight the ongoing efforts of OYA’s, Oromo Student Unions (OSUs), Oromo sports teams within the greater Oromo community, focusing heavily on initiatives being taken on by youth.

Historically, this conference has been a starting points for many of the leaders of our community today. Often times, the youth are overlooked and have been left at a loss in the search for our place in the community. It is imperative that the Oromo youth take their seat at the table and take on an active role in community activities and initiatives, where they have been underrepresented previously. Now is the time to empower the youth and assist in making these dreams a reality. It is important that we remember that the youth are the future of the Oromo and have powerful potential; we just need the courage to support this. The Oromo youth are calling on the entire Oromo community to help revive this historical conference and aid us in the effort to give back and contribute to our communities.
