Vaccine Freedom to Choose
Hello Donors,
We are 3 medical students trying to pursue our medical education. We recently were told by Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM-Monroe, Louisiana campus) that they are mandating the COVID-19 vaccine. We are all in our early 20’s and in great health.
Additionally, we have strong religious beliefs which oppose taking the vaccine.
We filed a religious exemption which was initially rejected by VCOM. After it was rejected, we filed a federal lawsuit to protect our
religious liberties. The discriminatory practices VCOM had engaged in for the unvaccinated students were unconstitutional. After the
lawsuit was filed, VCOM approved the religious exemption, however the school continued with its discriminatory practices by adding even more restrictions, including the inability to participate in required educational experiences. We filed for a Temporary Restraining Order to stop the discrimination, which was granted by the court in an 18 page Court Order strongly condemning VCOM’s discriminatory and
unlawful practices.
In a follow up to the judge’s Order, VCOM sent out an email to the entire student body attempting to single us out and embarrass us to our fellow students. They also indicated that they intend to appeal the court’s decision.
We are students self-funding our education. We have a passion for medicine and helping our communities. We did not plan to finance a
large legal challenge. Our lawsuit will likely have national implications, which has the potential to help many students exercise their
religious liberties. If anyone is able to help, your generosity would be greatly appreciated.
Kindest Regards,
Rachel, Shea and Kirsten
