Our son, Vaclav Vasquez, recently qualified at the Juvenile level (consists of the top 12 skaters in the United States) for the 2019 US Figure Skating Championships aka Nationals, January 18-22, 2019 in Detroit, Michigan.
Vaclav is turning 11 this December, is a member of the Desert Figure Skating Club, a member of the United States Figure Skating and has been skating since he was 6 years old. At first, he was not very good but he loved it and wanted to go skating every day. In fact, one time he proclaimed he wanted to sleep at the rink so he didn’t ever have to leave. A lot has changed since those good, easy, carefree and fun days. His training got gradually more frequent, more intense, definitely less fun and at times he wishes he didn’t have to go to the rink. But his passion and dedication to skating is still there and has become a very successful young figure skater. Most skaters, at the Juvenile level (10 to 13 years old), skate 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, and then there’s off ice conditioning/stretching. Competitive skaters cannot take more than a few days off during their training schedule. Forget spring, summer, and winter breaks, that time is dedicated to more and more training, both on and off the ice. With the increased training schedule, the costs of training climbs dramatically. The cost of attending more advanced competition increases. Then there are the costs of new boots and blades, sharpening, a new costume and a new choreographed program that can easily add up to thousands of dollars per year.
This year, Vaclav, started his competitive figure skating season in the middle of the summer, traveling and successfully competing in several Southern California competitions. Then in October, his first qualifying event, the Southwest Pacific Regional FS Championship where he placed 2nd with his life time best score of 44.85 (The US is divided into 9 Regionals where the top 4 finishers at each level in each region advance to the Sectionals) Then it was on to the Pacific Coast Sectional FS Championship where he placed 3rd!(The US is divided into 3 sectionals where the top 4 at each level in each sectional move on to the Nationals, US Figure Skating Championships). Now, in January 18-22, it’s on to the National, USFS Championships in Detroit, Michigan. We are very happy and proud of Vaclav’s outstanding accomplishments this year!
Just qualifying for Sectionals was a great accomplishment and qualify for the Nationals is so awesome. With his success this year, his skating expenses were much higher than we planned but well worth it! To those of you who have children in competitive, as well as recreational sports, you know how costly it is to train, go and compete locally, out of town and especially out of state. So now we are asking for funds to help cover some of the expenses in Vaclav’s continued journey to Nationals! The funds will help cover some of the expenses to travel and compete in Detroit (airfare, hotel, transportation, food, travel incidentals and coaching fees). We will appreciate any donation no matter how small because in the end, it will make a big difference. Thank you so much in advance!
