Valsetz Map Brochure
Valsetz was a company owned logging and lumber town in western Polk County, Oregon. Built in 1919, the owner, Boise Cascade Corporation bulldozed and burned the town in 1984. The company planted Douglas fir trees on the townsite. Thousands of loggers, mill workers and their families lived and worked in Valsetz over 65 years. Nothing remains now but memories.
In the 1970s two geographers from the University of Oregon obtained a small grant from theOregon Endowment for the Humanities to present a slide show to residents of Valsetz about the history and geography of this unique “village in the woods” at the end of a 16 mile gravel road. I was one of those geographers. The other was Professor Gary H. “Joe” Searl.
The one lasting thing to come of that project was a map of this company owned town. In cleaning out the basement I came across the 1950 map of Valsetz which we resurrected in 1979. Using that map and our research materials I prepared a 9x25 brochure of Valsetz to commemorate the memory of this town. This Go Fund Me project is an effort to recover design and printing costs of $1,650 for this project. Donate $10 for this project and you will receive 4 copies of this brochure by mail.
