On December 20, 2022, at approximately 10:42pm My mothers apartment where Kayla lived, caught fire in Downey Ca which is next door neighbors to my sister Vanessa Kaimimoku's apartment.
When I arrived to the apartments the first news was that Vanessa did not make it. However her three children were being held in a police vehicle to avoid seeing the tragedy. I spoke to the oldest son & he had let me know that while they were sleeping they heard an explosion & they & their mother ran out of the house. During this time a neighbor rushed to My mothers apartment and broke the door down as it was locked my mother did not want to get out of the burning apartment as Kayla was trapped on the second floor bathroom and was yelling for her to please come down. He saved her by pulling her out before the fire grew, she suffered only 15 % body burns. As the neighbor carried my mother out my mother yelled "Mi nina" the very moment Vanessa heard this she ran into the fire to attempt to bring her daughter out... the fire engulfed them both.
when the fire department arrived, they were found together... in the upstairs restroom.
Kayla experience cardiac arrest twice, was brought to the USC children's hospital but did not make it.
My sister Vannessa was a kind loving soul and a fierce STRONG single mother to her 4 children: Eric, 19; Rylee, 18 ; Kayla, who was also diabetic,12; and Inessa, 10.
We kindly ask for any help in my family’s time of need. Donations will be used to pay for memorial service arrangements for Vannessa and Kayla, housing expenses for my mother who lost all her belongings and home in this devastating fire, and basic living essentials for my niece and nephews who Vannessa left behind such as blankets, clothing, books, and food.
Thank you all for your support & love.
