In Honour of Shaheed Bhai Dhanna Singh Ji

The story of the protesting Kisaans in India has become all too familiar. However, what isn’t familiar is the build-up. The events leading up to the protests. The struggles and hardships kisaans face in India. What isn’t well known is over 16,500 farmers committed suicide from 2000 - 2015 in Punjab alone. What isn’t well known is Punjab produces 50% of the 13 million tonnes of wheat produced in India, despite being 1.5% of the geographical area of India. What isn’t well known is that the unemployment rate for youth in Punjab is 21.6% while the national average is 17.8%. That 40% of groundwater is contaminated, 1 out of every 8 Punjabi is suffering from mental illness and 80% have no access to treatment, that 70% of Punjab’s youth is addicted to drugs.
It was because of all these issues and the introduction of three farmers' ordinances by the Union Government, that Bhai Dhanna Singh Ji decided enough was enough, and he would stand up for those who cannot stand for themselves. That he would become a symbol of hope, a beacon of light during these dark times. Bhai Dhanna Singh Ji was made shaheed fighting for the rights of every kisaan, and every Punjabi. He stood his ground, firm in his principles and beliefs.
Bhai Dhanna Singh Ji gave the ultimate sacrifice in the battle for our rights as kisaans and as Punjabis. The least we can do is ensure his sacrifice was not in vain. The least we can do is ensure his family, who have lost a father, a husband, and a son is taken care of after this ordeal is through.
Please donate any amount you can to help support his family through the loss of Shaheed Bhai Dhanna Singh Ji.
The organizers of this gofundme are Gurpartap Singh Baidwan and Sukhleen Kaur Gill, two university students from Calgary, AB, Canada.
We are acquainted with the family this fundraiser is for, and are in direct contact with them. Sukhleens family back home is from the same area in Punjab (Mansa), and know of one another from there as well.
The donations will be given in their entirety to the family of Bhai Dhanna Singh Ji. It acts as disposable income for the family to spend on essentials such as the children's education, daily needs, home repairs, and maintenance, etc. Because the family has lost its breadwinner, they are forced into a tough economic situation. These funds will help alleviate some of the financial burden imposed on the family.
The family will receive the donations in cash, given directly to Manjit Kaur Chahal - wife of Saheed Dhanna Singh Chahal. It will be delivered through mutual contacts to their home address, and proof of the donations being received on their end will be posted on our social media.
