Jake’s journey began in October 2022. He developed a severe infection in his left knee. In a very short amount of time, the infection was in his bloodstream and he became septic. He was admitted to the hospital and underwent surgery to clean out the infection. At this time they changed parts of the hardware to help clear the infection. A PICC line was placed and he underwent 6 weeks of IV antibiotics. After about 10 days in the hospital, he was transferred to a long-term/post-acute rehab facility to focus on physical and IV antibiotic therapy. This went on through the holiday season while he finished the medication therapy at home with his wife and 2 children. January 9th, 2023 he received the news that the infection was clear. Labs showed successful results. However, 9 days later the infection was back. This time the treatment plan is much more intense. He underwent surgery again where they removed all of the knee joint hardware and placed an antibiotic spacer. Another PICC line was placed and 6 more weeks of IV antibiotics were ordered. If this treatment is successful they will then go in and do another total knee replacement. With the help of home health, he is able to complete his IV therapy at home with his family. He is currently in a knee immobilizer and can not fully weight bear. Among the challenges that his infection brings, it also makes it so he is unable to work very much.
