VELATRADIZIONALE CHIAMA A RACCOLTA La goletta di 28m, i gozzetti a vela latina, e i soci tutti formano VelaTradizionale, un’associazione che unisce la cultura del mare all’educazione per ragazzi e disabili tramite uscite e crociere in barca. Le difficoltà dovute al Covid-19 però mettono in serio pericolo il proseguire di questo importante progetto. Per questo, per la prima volta, abbiamo deciso di rivolgerci a tutti voi per avere un aiuto economico. The 28m schooner, the Lateen sail goiters, and the partners are what makes up Vela Tradizionale, an association that merges the sea culture to the education of disabled children through sailing adventures at sea. However, the difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic have put in jeopardy the future of this unique and important initiative. So, for the first time, we decided to ask all of you for your support. È una goletta con due alberi, vele auriche e vela quadra: quel genere di barca che a tutti i bambini fa venire in mente storie di pirati e di avventure passate. Dopo varie peripezie, nel 2012 diventa parte e ammiraglia della neonata associazione VelaTradizionale. Con il suo dislocamento di 55 tonnellate e la lunghezza di 28 metri, può ospitare fino a 17 persone e navigare in sicurezza per tutti i mari. Dal 2018 la flotta di VelaTradizionale si è arricchita con la presenza di gozzi, piccole imbarcazioni di 4-5 metri circa, dotate del tradizionale armo a vela latina che caratterizzava le classiche barche da pesca e da trasporto di tutto il mediterraneo. L’associazione nasce con il preciso scopo di divulgare la cultura e le tradizioni del mare, importante per un Paese come l’Italia, che vanta una lunga storia di marineria. Le attività proposte comprendono: percorsi didattici per bambini e ragazzi, il favorire progetti di inclusione sociale, e l’intento di spogliare il mondo della nautica da quella veste elitaria che negli ultimi anni si è formata. La vela deve essere uno sport per tutti. Da qui la scelta di utilizzare imbarcazioni legate alla tradizione - spesso dimenticate e abbandonate - dove il legno è l’elemento principe, e dove il gioco di squadra è essenziale. History of Vela Tradizionale  It all starts in Russia in 1994, when Pandora and her twins are brought to life, as replicas of a postale of the early 800s. She’s a two-masted schooner, with a fore-and-aft and a square sail: The kind of boat that makes children think of pirate stories and adventures of the past. Following numerous events, in 2012 Pandora becomes a member and admiral of the newly born association Vela Tradizionale. With a length of 28m and a 55tonne weight she can host up to 17 people and safely sail all seas. As of 2018 the fleet of Vela Tradizionale has grown with the addition of goiters, small boats of approximately 4-5m in length, gifted with the traditional lateen rigging that characterised typical fishing and transit boats in the Mediterranean. The association was born with the aim of sharing the culture and traditions of the sea, which are very important in countries with a rich sailing history like Italy. Activities undertaken include training courses for children and teens, and emphasis on social inclusion and integration projects, all with the aim of stripping that elitarian armour that has formed around the nautical world in recent years and granting access to all interested. Le attività didattiche in mare  La navigazione permette di poter lavorare sugli aspetti sociali della formazione di un gruppo, sull’ educazione nautica e su quella ambientale. Una crociera su Pandora è un’esperienza indimenticabile. Non è solo navigare su una barca a vela d’altri tempi, non è solo navigare tra 5 Terre, Isola d’Elba e Corsica, non è solo divertimento: è esperienza di vita. Dopo poco tempo a bordo un anonimo gruppo di individui si ritrova ad essere un unico organismo funzionante, nel quale ognuno ha un compito preciso: l’equipaggio. È qui che si libera il vero potenziale di queste crociere, è il fattore umano di relazione tra i giovani che ne fa un percorso di formazione personale e di gruppo. Dopo il primo paio di giorni si crea una routine in cui tutto funziona alla perfezione: squadra di cucina, di coperta, di pulizia. Tutti fanno tutto, e i ragazzi passano da pulire il pavimento a issare la maestra, da aiutare in cucina a stare al timone. A bordo si creano amicizie, si aiuta a fare le manovre a vela, insieme a quattro istruttori di VelaTradizionale sempre presenti e vigili a bordo. L’attività didattica itinerante sui gozzi vuole emulare uno stile di vita simile a quello di pescatori ed equipaggi delle barche da trasporto, ripercorrendone le rotte liguri. Lessons at sea Sailing provides an opportunity to explore different aspects of team working, education at sea, and environmental awareness. A cruise on Pandora is a truly unforgettable experience. It’s not just sailing on an authentic ship from a past era, it’s not just sailing through the 5 Terre, Isola d’Elba and Corsica, it’s not just fun: it’s an invaluable life experience. Not long after boarding, the many individuals on board turn into a singular entity, where every member has a precise task, they become the crew. It’s at this point that the true potential of the cruise is unlocked, where the youth on board begin a journey of personal growth and learn invaluable lessons of team working. After a couple of days on board, a system is created which runs close to perfection: Kitchen crew, deck crew, and cleaning crew. The roles are rotated, and everybody gets to do everything. The youth go from cleaning the floors to hoisting the main sail, from helping in the kitchen to controlling the helm. On board friendships are born and members help each other to manoeuvre the ship, all under the support and surveillance of four Vela Tradizionale instructors. The teaching programme on the goiters emulates a lifestyle like that of fishermen and crews on transit boats and retraces their Ligurian routes. L’attenzione al sociale  L’associazione tiene molto a proporre progetti e percorsi dedicati a soggetti più sensibili. Diverse abilità portano ad avere diversi orizzonti, ma potersi cimentare nell’avventura in mare è qualcosa che aiuta a mettersi alla prova, a lavorare in team, a prendere più coscienza di sé. Queste crociere sono certo più impegnative per i membri dell’equipaggio, ma non manca una vitale cooperazione con le associazioni di settore, e i sorrisi ripagano ampiamente gli sforzi fatti. Social committment  Programmes involving people from more sensitive backgrounds are very important to our association. Different circumstances bring about different opportunities for people; and taking challenges at sea gives you an opportunity to test yourself, teaches you to work in a team context, and makes you more aware of your own abilities and values. Our cruises are certainly challenging for both the crew and the association, but we have the support and cooperation of similar organizations in the sector, which help us to bring about the smiles and happiness that ultimately repay all the efforts. Tramandare la tradizione  Parte integrante dell’attività associativa riguarda il periodo dedicato ai lavori di manutenzione della flotta, che diventano occasione didattica e formativa, permettendo ai soci di portare avanti le tradizioni dell’antica marineria e cantieristica navale. La collaborazione con l’Università degli Studi di Genova, ha dato agli studenti la possibilità di realizzare tirocini e tesi per i corsi di ingegneria e design nautico e navale. I ragazzi si cimentano in lavori che spaziano dalla carpenteria in legno all’attrezzatura velica, permettendo di salvaguardare e mantenere il patrimonio storico nautico di cui l’associazione si fa custode e portavoce. Passing on the tradition  An important part of our association is the time spent in the maintenance and repairs of our fleet, which becomes a teaching opportunity, and allow our partners to carry on traditions of old school shipbuilding and craftmanship. Our collaboration with the University of Genoa provides Engineering and Naval Architecture students with opportunities to undertake internships with our crew and receive invaluable practical experience to aid with dissertation projects and enhance their learning. Students try their hand at works ranging from carpentry to repairing and crafting sailing equipment, allowing for the safeguarding and sustenance of the nautical heritage which our association is a keeper of. La richiesta di aiuto A causa dello stop forzato in primavera, non è stato possibile procedere con le attività manutentive programmate dall’associazione. Grazie allo sforzo dei soci siamo riusciti comunque a mettere le barche in condizioni di navigare e ad organizzare un programma di attività – ridotto – nei soli mesi estivi. In questi anni ci siamo sempre sostenuti economicamente grazie alle attività didattiche svolte in mare. La riduzione di queste ultime ha messo in crisi le risorse finanziarie dell’associazione, per questo siamo stati spinti a chiedere aiuto a tutti i nostri soci, agli amici e a tutte le persone che anche senza conoscerci hanno a cuore il futuro di un’associazione come la nostra. The call for help  Due to the sudden stop in spring it hasn’t been possible to proceed with all the planned maintenance works. Thanks to the hard work of our partners we were still able to finish off some of the works, put most of the boats at sea, and organise activities, even though much reduced from the previous years, during the summer months. In the past years, most of the income of our association came from teaching activities and programmes undertaken at sea. However, the great reduction in activities due to global pandemic has stressed the financial resources of our association, and has brought us to ask for the help of all our friends, associates, and everyone who cares about the values and future of an organization like ours. Come useremo i fondi raccolti  Il vostro supporto quest'anno sarà fondamentale e ci permetterà di: - Garantire a Pandora le manutenzioni che non ha ricevuto lo scorso anno sommate agli ordinari lavori annuali, senza i quali diventerebbe molto difficile affrontare un’altra stagione in perfetta efficienza. - Permettere il completamento del restauro di Gian-Orietta, ultima arrivata in casa VelaTradizionale, un gozzo centenario di grande valore storico. - Non dover interrompere il perseguimento degli scopi formativi, didattici e sociali.
