VELOS FOR VETERANS
FIRST RESPONDER CAREERS
With a combined first-responder service of 60 plus years, Paul and Mike have attended many critical incident events. Paul's work as a firefighter and Mike's mountain rescue and law enforcement experience exposed them to the trauma and emotions that come with trying to manage “someone else’s worst day”. They both feel very fortunate to have had the support required to navigate their careers successfully, ending with relatively good mental and physical health. But others within their ranks have not been so lucky. So, rather than spend their retirement celebrating their good fortune, Mike and Paul felt they should give back to the first responder community.
VETERANS SUPPORTING VETERANS
Paul and MIke are raising awareness and funds for two foundations that land squarely within the scope of their careers.
The Calgary Veterans Service Society provides support services to veterans in Alberta, including help in managing Post Traumatic Stress Injury. This Society aids people who have served in all branches of the Canadian military, including the Reserves, as well as first responders from law enforcement, fire-rescue and paramedic services. Post Traumatic Stress Injury can be devastating to individuals as well as their families. The Calgary Veterans Service Society is there to help and we want to help them.
Ned’s Wish is a charitable organisation that supports retired police and military dogs. Police K9s work very hard during their careers and can end up with long term injuries that are costly to treat. Ned’s Wish provides support to ensure these amazing K9s have a much deserved healthy retirement.
Let’s Get Cycling !
It was very apparent to Paul and Mike that good physical and mental health were absolute necessities to perform in their chosen careers. Being on the pointy end of emergency response calls requires a clear, calm mind and a body that can manage hard, awkward work for extended periods of time. In retirement they try to carry that notion of sound mind and body into their activities. Cycling has always been a big part of both their lives, so when Paul suggested bike trekking and a fundraiser, the idea immediately gained traction.
In mid September 2024, Paul and Mike intend to bike trek approximately 500 km of the Kettle Valley Trail, a decommissioned railway line which has become an outstanding cycling venue. This trail includes sections of the Kettle Valley and Columbia/Western rail beds, pushing through the Okanagan area. They are actively promoting their ride, with support from the Bow Valley Community, and trying to raise $10,000 to be split equally between the Calgary Veterans Service Society and Ned’s Wish. All donations will go directly to these two charities.
