Bonnie (Burkhalter) Houldson is and has been a Clay County Native all of her 40 years of life.
She is a graduate from Clay High and after High School she began her work in the medical field by obtaining a certification as a phlebotomist and shortly there after she married Rod Houldson a California transplant where they then bought a house in Middleburg and planned to have a family.
Bonnie continued to work in the medical field so she could help others in a more personal way.
Bonnie then acquired her nurses aide certification and she continued her education so she could be a LPN Nurse while waiting tables at whiteys fish camp.
Bonnie worked full time at whiteys and went to school full time and during this time carrying there first child Tayler (myself).
Bonnie obtained her two year degree as an LPN and began working full time at Orange Park medical center where she began doing what she always wanted to do and that was help people.
This was not enough for Bonnie, she loved helping others and the simple thank you from strangers for doing her job became a passion of hers.
Bonnie continued on with her education and once again she was working full time and going to school full time at UNF in an effort to obtain her Bachelors degree in nursing while once again being pregnant with her second child Jerrod.
Bonnie then took a little time off work while caring for her two children and it was around this time Bonnie was offered to attend pre med medical school at FSU. Bonnie really had the desire to be a Dr. However, she and her husband felt that the dedication to become a Dr. would not be beneficial to their children.
Once again Bonnie returned to work as a Nurse and worked in numerous areas in the hospital to include ICU, Labor & Delivery, Floor Nursing and ultimately the ER where she thrived on the full speed ahead action and once again the ability to help people to include saving lives.
Once again, Bonnie was forced to take time off of work where she then had their third child Faithe.
After a brief leave of absence she returned to the ER and that's when repetitive health issues began to occur about ten years ago.
First at 30 years old a hysterectomy, then roughly a year later gall bladder and another year later appendix removal and then numerous kidney infections and multiple kidney stones.
This entire time after multiple surgeries to numerous organs and being hospitalized numerous times with no known diagnosis from multiple doctors and numerous hospitals on June 30th 2013 Bonnie went to church a little early and found there was no candy to give to the little kids in Sunday school Bonnie decided she would run to the store and by some at the corner store. Bonnie left church and within one minute she was hit by a driver that ran a stop sign. Bonnie was taken by rescue and she began to experience a pain she never felt before.
The Dr's scanned Bonnie's back and found lesions on her spine. We were then referred to a cancer specialist and admitted in a hospital for three weeks with no true diagnosis.
After becoming so frustrated we left the hospital and went to Mayo clinic and it was then after multiple tests that Bonnie was diagnosed with a extremely rare and painfully debilitating disease known as MAST CELL DISEASE.
MCD has several levels of this disease from simple rashes to the worst which is what Bonnie has and that's went the mast cells in her blood multiply and regenerate causing vast amounts of mast cells in your blood which in return make them fight each other thus causing her bouts of extreme pain and inflammation of all of her internal organs which causes the inability to eat or drink normally and or the ability to keep it down.
One of Bonnie's main food sources is ice cream and Popsicles as this type of food cools and soothes her intestinal track.
Bonnie is and has been being treated as a clinical study as well as giving her our only hope in stopping this disease from getting worse.
So far Bonnie has been hospitalized numerous times for weeks at a time and has seen numerous Dr. appointments with numerous testing.
At this point there is no cure and the prognosis is not good. To date there is no relief for her intestinal portion of her disease and we take it day by day as she fights for herself and her family.
What I am asking you all today is for help. If you financially can't help my family then I understand, but keep us in your prayers. Especially my mother as she fights for peace and a normal life. Thank you all so much for taking time out of your day to read the story of my courageous mother. God Bless you all.
