Vet Expenses for Flounder
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Megan Moberly. I'm fundraising for my good friend Melissa Mendelson. Her kennel is Flight Risk Mushing. While on a run with her team on 02/17/22, her dogs got into an altercation and her sweet boy Flounder was seriously injured.
Flounder was first taken to Leading Edge Vet for an emergency visit there on 02/17/22 and then was referred to the Veterinary Animal Hospital at the University of Minnesota and was taken that evening of 02/17/22 where he was then stabilized.
Today on 02/18/22 the University did exploratory surgery on Flounder's leg to remove the dead tissue and repair it as best they could. During today's surgery, they needed to remove a LOT of muscle from major muscle groups. They were able to repair and reattach some muscles but a lot was shredded and had to be extricated entirely. They couldn't close up the wound so it is basically an open wound packed with sponges and gauze, so he will be staying at the University of Minnesota hospital for the next 1-2 days to be monitored, which will also give the vets insight on whether his leg will recover or whether the tissue will continue to die, in which case the leg would either need additional surgery or to be amputated altogether. The surgeon gave his leg a 50/50 chance of recovery, but only time will tell.
Flounder's costs are currently at $600 from the initial evet visit, $2000 from his first two days and care at the University, and $5500 for the exploratory surgery on his leg. It will be between $500-800 a day for additional hospitalization, which for 1-2 additional days would be $500-1600 depending on the exact number of days and care he needs. At the moment we are looking at $9700 at the high end without any additional surgery. Thanks to the community's generosity, Melissa has already received $7700 in donations. However, there is the potential that Flounder will need additional surgery, and there will certainly be physical therapy costs to come, so I've set the GoFundMe to 5000 for anyone who can contribute.
