Veterinary School, FINALLY!

Dear Friends and Family,
Guess what?! After many years of education, I am going back to school for some more education! You’d almost think I enjoy being a full time student. After 8 years of university and 3 years of practical hands-on experience working in clinics and volunteering abroad, I will begin studying veterinary medicine! FINALLY. I have come to love (almost) every aspect of the animal health care field and have learnt that to truly prosper as a veterinarian you have to think on your feet and confront unpredictable challenges. Equally as important, you can’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! I’m confident my formal education and years of practical experience have prepared me to not only prosper, but to exceed expectations as a veterinarian. This next chapter in my life is huge and I am SO EXCITED!!!
Initially, I was hoping to attend the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph but unfortunately I wasn’t offered a position this year. Things don’t always go the way you plan and that’s okay. Maybe an option B? No. I decided that pursuing veterinary medicine is the most important thing to me, and so I shouldn’t deviate from my path because of one (albeit major) obstacle. So with that being said, in September I will be moving to Croatia where I have officially accepted my seat!
The program will take 6 years to complete, is taught in english, and I was fortunate to be one of 25 students admitted this year. The cost for this school is more reasonable than others, but it will still be a struggle. I will be able to fund about 60% of my education through my savings, family members, and OSAP. For housing, I will be living in a hostel where I will work part-time in exchange for accommodation. I am so glad I was able to sort out this living agreement because it will help me save $$$ in rent over 6 years! Taking that into consideration, I approximate my total cost to be $180,000 for my tuition, food, and miscellaneous expenses.
The most difficult part of this whole transition is going to be leaving behind the comfort of my family, friends, and Sabina - my support systems - for the next several years. This has been my biggest goal and it’s finally coming to fruition. If you have any friends in or around Croatia that you could introduce me to. If you have any advice for travelling and life in that part of the world, please reach out to me! Lastly, I would be so thankful if you are able to contribute any amount to help me fund my education costs abroad. Anything and everything counts. I have applied for scholarships and bursaries but have not heard back yet. I have also applied for a student line of credit to study abroad, but have not been able to secure funding through that approach. So, I’m reaching out to my family and friends for help!
In addition to my utmost appreciation and gratitude, I can provide a LIFETIME SUPPLY of veterinary related advice! Even if you can’t contribute at the moment, still feel free to reach out if you have any questions. We all know that veterinarians exist, but very few people actually have a veterinarian in their circle of friends. Take advantage of my veterinary knowledge! Also, to anybody who is travelling near or around Croatia, you are always welcome to visit and I will have a place for you to sleep. We can adventure together and drink good coffee. I will be lonely so please come!
Thank you everyone,
Ash
