Music Collaboration in India

The Concept

Music in India has developed hugely over the last two decades with a thriving music scene that is open to innovation and artistic freedom. It is a country where music is celebrated and embedded strongly within the culture with genres ranging from traditional Indian Classical to diverse styles such as Dubstep. The biggest outlet of music is through films making it a fundamental part in reaching a wider audience and a characteristic motif of Indian cinema. It is an industry where films are directed with songs such as musicals in the western world. India has produced some of the finest musicians who have changed the world of music like Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussein and A.R. Rahman to name a few. We hear frequently of music collaboration of artists from the east and their influences to western music, but unfortunately not so often vice versa.

Nowadays everything is more accessible due to internet, social network, television and radio. Music is exposed to listeners around the world inspiring them to innovate and explore other cultures and their music. Fortunately, I have become a victim to such exposure!

I was born and raised in Europe. I grew up listening to all kinds of music, including film music from India. I studied western classical piano at the Trinity College of Music in London and then started working as a composer for films and television in Europe. However, I have always been strongly drawn to film music in India. It is organic in the composition and open to influences without losing its roots. It is music with such diversity, originality, gracefulness and tradition.

The Project

To pursue this interest, I have taken the initiative to compose an album of indian songs in Chennai (South India) this December. I shall be creating an album of 7 songs which will recorded with indian singers and musicians that have graduated from the prestigious KM Conservatory of Music. The project will be recorded with various male and female singers with songs written by the lyricist Ram Ganesh. The album will then be made commercially available in India and around the globe! The project shall be an opportunity to integrate music from the west and experiment with ideas to create and explore the possibilities of composition. It will be a starting point for musicians inspired by music from India to experiment with music making and find a unique sound that may bring an exciting change to a fruitful music scene.

To realise this project I will be needing your help. The funding you offer will be put towards paying the musicians, sound engineer, singers, lyricist and the studio hire. Every little help will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way in this journey!

Every supporter will receive a downloadable copy of the album as a thank you!
