Walking with Thunder

Right now and together we are grieving. Wounded by isolation; severed from the touch of each other, especially our loved ones; lost for now is our gatherings; social media joins us but it also contributes to withdrawal. The pandemic has driven us into separate corners where loneliness and depression are now a pandemic in themselves.

Thunder and I want to help.

Trauma and One Dad's Offering

Trauma is searing of the soul. Anyone who has experienced tearing of the heart and mind from unexpected tragedy understands that deep gashes in our inner selves never in truth heal. For the wounded to survive means to search out safe respite to somehow ease a seemingly endless dark night. Seclusion and sleep become default mechanisms as words are not a fix for the numbing.

The loss of my daughter Anna of sudden cardiac arrest at the age of twenty-six emotionally crippled me in a way that I have yet to find peace. Her loss was in addition to the passing of Sarah, my six-year-old daughter who died in a previous decade from environmental poisoning. The deaths of both daughters in turn preceded the death of my son Paul who lived only a short while after coming into the world.

I share this not for sympathy or sorrow but to let you, the reader, know that I know what it is to carry a brokenness in one’s psyche that can be haunting to endure and never ending. I also understand that there are many who grieve and suffer depression, something made especially heavier during our current era of social upheaval and dislocation.

But listen. I have a donkey friend whose name is Thunder. Connecting to animal spirit as a touchstone to the natural world can also be a timeless balm to help soothe and inspire creativity, a readily accessible medicine that offers unconditional companionship. I have found it so in a series of wanderings I am in the midst of that I call Walking with Thunder. Others join us who are simply drawn to the meditative outings, the simple, uncomplicated relief that they offer. We invite you to come along, be a part of our herd? Thunder and I will wait for you and move at your pace?

The Thunder Fund is meant to establish a financial base to support an ongoing series of walks with the donkey Thunder, in Prince Edward County, Ontario. The fund helps pay for related costs and fees. The outings can be private or you may choose to join a small group to take in parts of our island in Lake Ontario. Accommodation can be arranged as well as lunches for our rest stops along the way. If you are unable to take part directly, we ask that you consider supporting others in need of respite from isolation and also for the betterment of mental health. The smallest donation is appreciated and Thunder and I thank you in advance.
