Calling Team Heidi

I am Heidi Scanlon's sister, Jenny. Those of you who know my beloved and sparkly sister know that she sustained a severe traumatic brain injury on March 16, 2016 on her way home from having dinner with friends. She had emergent and life-saving surgery to remove a huge bleed from the frontal lobes of her brain. Her very contused brain is slowly and surely healing, but she has a long way to go before she will be independent. We are optimistic that she will be her brilliant self again. Currently she is in National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, re-learning to do things we all take for granted. Her treatment team estimates she will be there for another month.

I am creating this site because many of you who love Heidi have asked how you can help, especially because you live far away. As you might imagine, despite Heidi's good health insurance, there will be a significant portion that Heidi and her wife, Kande, will have to pay out of pocket. Kande is currently in the process of critically assessing their home and determining how it can be made more safe and accessible for Heidi when she finally makes it home (bathroom accomodations, closing off the basement steps, possibly purchasing new furniture that Heidi can more easily get in and out of--just a few examples). All of the funds raised through this campaign will go directly to Kande and Heidi to be used for these items and others that will undoubtedly come up along this journey.

Like so many of you, I adore Heidi and Kande. Watching them suffer through this is almost unbearable. Decreasing their financial burden is just one way to help decrease their suffering, and I want to give you all the opportunity to pitch in and help them. 

The gratitude and love I feel for Team Heidi continues to be endless. Thank you all so very much.
