One of my best friends, Alexa Baute, was shot and killed Tuesday, April 7 in Logan Square on Milwaukee and Fullerton. She was standing outside a 7/11, social distancing, waiting to get inside.
My brother, Ricky Gould, was locking up his bicycle a few feet away and saw Alexa crumple to the ground. He rolled her over and she was bleeding from the mouth. She had been shot. They didn't even hear a gunshot go off. He just saw her laying there. He yelled for someone to call an ambulance. We found out later that Alexa took a gunshot to the chest. She was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Alexa's dad, Jeff Baute says, "She had a vibrant soul and loved the city. She was awesome, full of life, independent, and loved to make people happy".
Alexa's mom, Patti Baute says, "Alexa was my rock. I know that's backwards, but she was MY rock".
Since this is a homicide in the city of Chicago, the state will be covering her funeral expenses. We cannot have a funeral at this current time with COVID-19, but we will share those details once we can have a service in her memory.
However, this is a traumatic event which my brother and another witness experienced first-hand.
We are seeking to raise money to cover expenses related to providing therapy for my brother and the other witness, who do not have health insurance. Quality doctors are very expensive, and for such a traumatic experience for them both to witness we want them to recover from this in the best way possible.
Application of proceeds - 1st) Provide therapy for those involved; 2nd) any money left over would go towards a memorial in Alexa's name. Depending how much money we raise we will discuss with her parents how best to donate it in her memory to celebrate her life.
