Rabid Bobcat Attacks 4-Year-Old & Family
I am submitting this in behalf of my parents, my three brothers, and their families. They just went through a traumatic experience this past weekend and are in need of assistance.
They were camping in southeast Arizona, as they have every July for many years now. On Sunday, July 28th around 7 p.m., my 4-year-old niece was attacked suddenly from behind by a rabid bobcat. She received multiple bites and scratches on her body and head. Over the course of the next terrifying minutes, the bobcat attacked four more family members as they were all trying to fight it off and protect their family and children.
They then rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment of their wounds and for rabies vaccination. However, hospitals do not typically carry large quantities of the vaccine due to the extreme cost. Because of the lack of vaccinations, my family had to separate and travel to several different hospitals around Arizona to receive the vaccination.
After conferring with the Health Department, it was determined that all 15 at the campsite were required to receive the rabies treatment, as it is untreatable once symptoms start, and is almost always fatal at that point.
Due to the nature of the vaccination, several shots are required over a span of two weeks, requiring additional hospital visits.
Vaccinating 15 people, visiting the hospital multiple times, ambulance charges and other medical charges are starting to build. The more I learn about their costs, the more it is starting to look like my family will have to take on exorbitant expenses!
We will continue to work as a family to help one another. We will also work with insurance and any other medical relief available, but even with that help, their costs are estimated to be between $30,000 and $50,000 per family.
We are reaching out to ask for help to overcome these extreme costs. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
