Vijayakumari & Byravamurthy Memorial Library
Donation protected
Prof. Byravamurthy, as he was fondly known, is my “Thaatha” (grandfather in Kannada). He was a prolific author who penned over 60 books and over 3000 poems in Kannada. He served the University of Mysore for 36 years. He passed away recently, this past year. Thaatha was an avid book lover; he spent his lifetime collecting books and sharing his knowledge with others. He believed that education was the key to children's success and improving their lives. Thaatha left behind a collection of over 3000 books, which needed a home. In collaboration with the Mahakavi Shadaksaradeva Vidyavardaka Association in Yelandur, India, my family established a library in memory of both my Ajji (grandmother in Kannada), Vijayakumari, who was also an author, and Thaatha.
Currently, the library has only Kannada-language books. The primary goal of this fundraiser is to expand the book collection to include the latest English and Kannada-language fiction and non-fiction books, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and comics. Funds will also be used towards purchasing furniture, desks, and storage units for the books. This will help us expand the library and improve foot traffic. The library is open for only three hours a day, three days a week. The extra funding will also help us expand the hours of service so more students can have access to the library.
This town is severely underserved when it comes to educational resources, and many children from weak economic backgrounds in the community grow up without access to books or a proper education. By expanding the offerings of this library filled with my grandfather's books, we can offer these children the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their dreams. Any excess funds will be used to sponsor the school fees of those who will need financial backing at the SDVS Education Institution, Yelandur, India. Overall, I believe that this library will be a great source of good in the community. It is a fitting tribute to my grandfather's lifelong dedication to learning and education.
Please check out the YouTube video of the library.
