Support for Vince and Leah Schofield

Vince is only 51 years old, has been married to Leah for almost 31 years. They have 6 children, (and others that feel like their own) and 3 grandchildren. Vince has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma. We pray for a miracle that he can make a full recovery but it would be a long uphill battle. In the meantime our hope is for the family to be able to spend time together and focus on him and do some bucket list adventures for Vince.
The Schofield’s have spent their entire married lives (almost 31 years) being there for other people, whether it be in time, food, shelter, or support. Let’s rally around this family and show how much we love and support them.
As many of you know Vince has not been feeling well for a few months. It started in late September of 2020 with severe stomach pain, indigestion, and taking time off work (Yes, time off of work…not normal for Vince). They ran multiple tests to try and figure out what was going on. In early November an ultrasound found an issue in his stomach. ER sent him home with a referral to a gastroenterologist. The next day while he was at work he called Leah in severe distress, she picked him and took him back to the ER and he was rushed into surgery shortly after with a diagnosis of a perforated ulcer (they were unaware that he even had an ulcer). After a week in the hospital with an NG tube and being watched to make sure there was no other damage he went home and was feeling good for a couple of weeks. A biopsy done during the repair came back negative but he was starting to not feel well again and not being able to eat. After several other visits with doctors and another scope with a negative biopsy and the assurance that things were normal, things seemed to still be going downhill. He started vomiting and the pain was increasing again so Leah took him back to Royal Columbian Hospital on March 23. Another scope with biopsy was done, CT scans, x-rays, and bloodwork.
The biopsy came back as Stage 3 signet-ring cell adenocarcinoma (very rare aggressive stomach cancer). Vince had a PICC line inserted to pump him full of nutrients before he was to have resection surgery on March 31. Unfortunately during surgery they discovered that the cancer has spread throughout the peritoneal cavity, a resection was not possible. They did a bypass surgery leaving in the tumor and metastasized tumors, inserting a feeding tube and have adjusted him to Stage 4. As of right now Vince is still in RCH recovering from the surgery and being given nutrients to get his strength up before being released and referred to the Abbotsford Cancer Clinic for Palliative Chemotherapy.
