Vincent Horan Memorial Park Fund
Donation protected
I am a Riverbend neighborhood volunteer partnering with City of Stamford Parks to renovate the Vincent M. Horan Memorial Park. This strip park was created when the state moved houses to make Washington Boulevard into a 4 lane highway. The corridor road has made life miserable for residents here.
We are trying to create a more viable type of a median or buffer zone for the neighborhood in order to decrease noise, auto pollution and create a beautiful greenspace for people and animals to be in. The park is popular with dogwalkers and it is a pedestrian and bicycle transit route. So far, we have planted a beautiful Memorial Garden and 5 small oases or vignettes for people to perambulate. The city has provided some trees and we have planted a trail of white dogwoods the length of the park.
All of the planting and maintenance not provided by the city has been made possible through neighborhood donations and volunteer work to plant, weed and water.
Next Spring we want to connect our park to the Mill River and Scalzi Park system through improved sidewalks and crosswalks. It will require landscaping some neglected parkland, where houses are close to the highway and the sidewalks are dangerous for bikes and children.
Monetary donations would help cover further cleanup, tree and shrub planting, watering, mulching and maintenance. We are hoping the city will help with the sidewalks, crosswalks and bikepath.
Your help would make our neighborhood more livable and create a better balanced urban ecosystem for all to enjoy! Lastly, when completed, we would like our narrow strip park to be used as a model for other places.
