Kim Vitale’s Fight Against Breast Cancer

This fundraising page is for my sister-in-law, Kim Vitale, a cherished sister, wife, mother, friend, and advocate. In this unpredictable journey of life, there emerge individuals whose resilience becomes a testament to the strength of the human spirit. Kim embodies such strength and through her own journey, marked by the unwavering courage of a mother with a heart of gold, now confronts the daunting shadows of cancer once again. Beside her stands a young warrior, her 7-year-old son, who has battled cancer not once, but twice. Last year, Kim faced thyroid cancer, leaving her with lasting complications, including hypoparathyroidism. Just as hope began to weave its way back into their lives, the cruel winds of adversity delivered yet another blow right before Christmas—breast cancer, striking at an age when one should be savoring life's beauty.

Adding to the complexity, a genetic mutation has been identified, hinting at potential future battles. Kim is now embarking on a year-long journey of treatments, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, and surgery. The strain of her health struggles has forced her to step back from work, exacerbating the financial strain on the family.

Due to a recent change in insurance, the family has experienced an unforeseen increase in medical expenses. The weekly barrage of medical appointments incurs substantial co-pays, adding up to $150 each week. Kim also requires a $900 monthly medication for hypothyroidism, a cost not covered by insurance. This financial burden is compounded by the fact that Kim's ability to work part-time at a pediatrician's office has been curtailed due to her compromised immune system. Despite the immense challenges, this family has been a pillar of generosity in their community, contributing to charities like Alex’s Lemonade Stand, participating in toy drives for hospitals, and actively engaging in community events and schools. Now, in their time of need, they find themselves grappling with the harsh reality of cancer's financial toll.
