When most people think of Cuba they think of a fantastic place to vacation - a Caribbean paradise with pristine beaches, salsa music, mojitos, cigars and lots of old cars to take photos of. While it IS all of that it is also an island prison for the people who live there. And the government tries it's best to keep that truth out of the tourist brochures.
Cuba is a place with no freedoms and almost none of the things the rest of the world takes for granted. Basic things like freedom of speech, civil rights, plentiful food, job opportunities or reliable internet do not exist for the Cuban people.
So I have written VIVA. A feature film about a young Cuban ballerina (Lorena) desperate to escape the island and an American businessman (Simon) taking his tech business there via a partnership with the government. The goal of this film is to show audiences what life is really like their through Simon and Lorena's story.
We plan to shoot this May in Cartagena, Colombia so we need to finish raising the money right away. We need to start spending money on things like permits, insurance, travel and other expenses.
Supporting the film will not only mean the world to me, but it's one of the best things you can do to help the people of Cuba. Help a mainstream story get made that tells the true story of what life is really like there. Let's raise awareness of what life is really like there and start conversations that will get the wheels of change in motion.
I've got a pretty good track record of making great content. I've been doing it through my commercial production company Big Machine for almost 16 years. And I've been doing it as an independent director for longer than that. So I promise to put every penny to good use!
