Steve Geiman Stroke Recovery Fund

Coach Geiman, as many of you know him, suffered a large left-temporal brain hemorrhage in August 2022. Just days before, Coach Geiman was out doing the activity he loved most: coaching and cheering his runners in a regular weekday practice. Just weeks before he had seen his doctor to check on his myeloma cancer, which has been in remission since receiving a stem cell transplant. To say it has been a rough few years is an understatement.

The massive stroke has resulted in significant impairments in cognition and speech, making therapy a challenge. He has lost a great deal of memory, speech, and normal day-to-day abilities that we all take for granted. His speech is especially challenging and he has been diagnosed with Aphasia, which comes in a few forms, but in his case, means that he can talk, but his words don't make any sense a lot of the time, and it's extremely frustrating for him. His memory is also impaired, and we don't get offended when he doesn't remember certain things or certain people, it's just part of the journey. But Coach Geiman, like so many of the athletes he has coached over the years, is a warrior and continues the fight! Shortly after Thanksgiving, the family transitioned him to a memory care facility well-suited to his daily living needs. Just days later, he assumed the caring role he knows so well: trying to 'chat' with fellow residents, coach the nurses and residents, and helping share his indomitable spirit.

As anyone knows who has confronted the economics of long-term care and intense therapy for seniors in this country, the cost is significant. As we've been told by numerous doctors, this is a marathon and not a sprint. Little do they know that running is what he knows best!! So we are trying to make sure he has the care he needs to be able to continue to fight and gain back normal speech, cognition, and the physical activities he loved so much. His current battle is focused on physical therapy to get him moving and walking in a safer manner, and also speech therapy to help him regain more of his normal speech as he continues to struggle with aphasia.

All funds raised will support Coach Geiman's journey and help provide the safe, supportive, and attentive surroundings he needs to continue his fight forward.
The stroke may have robbed him of his previous life, the daily coaching and activities he knew and loved and was passionate about, but we will not let it rob him of his current life and the love of those around him.

He truly loves his community and would be embarrassed to ask for anything, which is why we are stepping in to ask for him, knowing that sometimes it's okay to ask for help. On behalf of my sister, conservator/guardian Brecken Geiman and the rest of our family, we thank you for any support you can lend to my father, Coach Geiman.
