How Can We Help a Fellow Christian in Need?

Meet Jacob and Paulina Baker, a lovely, young Christian couple that have been blessed with nine children.

Jacob was born in a Lutheran-Christian home in Minnesota and moved with his family in 1996 to a small, Alaskan rural town on the Kenai Peninsula.  Here, the Baker’s started a family construction business and attended Faith Lutheran Church of Homer, to the present.  Jacob was confirmed at Faith Lutheran, served as acolyte and lector. He taught Sunday school in high school and again when he was asked to serve later. He has been the church property manager and is currently president of the congregation.

Paulina was adopted from Poland at the age of nine. She met Jacob in elementary school and later the two dated in high school. Jacob asked to marry Paulina in 2006 and the couple have been blessed with nine children. She is a busy homeschool mother who also teaches Sunday school and helps in the community when needed.

Most recently, on March 16th, their youngest,  Cameron Noah came early at home at only 27 weeks old, weighing only 2 lbs. 11 oz. After only 15 minutes of life, Cameron stopped breathing. After calling 911, Jacob kept baby Cameron alive for 25 minutes with CPR until Volunteer EMT’s arrived.

Cameron and his mother, Paulina, were taken to Homer Hospital by ambulance, where they were met by Pastor Heidorn, who baptized Cameron before being airlifted with Jacob to Providence Newborn Intensive Care Unit in Anchorage.  Remember, this was the start of COVID-19 virus in Alaska and because Paulina had an elevated temperature she was unable to fly with Baby Cameron. Jacob flew with Baby Cameron, but because he'd been exposed to Paulina and her fever, he was denied entry into the NIC Unit. The next day, Jacob flew home to be with Paulina and take care of their eight children. Paulina was released from the hospital with negative test results, and five days later Jacob and Paulina drove 200 miles to Providence Hospital to be with their son Cameron.  Now, given the new hospital rules because of the Covid-19 virus, once they entered the NIC Unit they could not leave and come back in.

Jacob was able to stay only five days with Paulina and Cameron. The couple made the decision that Paulina would stay with Baby Cameron and Jacob would go home to take care of the kids and work.

Cameron now at 33 weeks old weighs 4lb 4oz and is getting stronger even though he still has his daily struggles. He has seven weeks to his due date (June 10) which makes his hospital stay even longer. Because of today's technology the family is able to witness the miracle of  watching Cameron grow outside his mothers womb which is a miraculous in itself. We are also extremely grateful for the care received by the staff at Providence NIC Unit.

Their days are no longer normal and much is unknown for their future.  The cost of this experience is headed in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and with no health insurance, the burden is even greater for this young family. Jacob has always been able to supply the needs for his family, never asking but giving to others in need.  Their home church supports them with prayer and meals, and family and friends help with care of the eight children at home while Jacob works.

Jacob and Paulina are trusting in GOD’s word and their faith each day. Family members have started a fundraising account, which has been set up to help ease the unforeseen financial burden they are facing.

If the Holy Spirit touches your heart to do so, please help a fellow Christian in need. Please pray for Baby Cameron to have a full life to honor and serve Our Lord Jesus as the rest of his family does.

With much Hope and Love,

Ruhiyyih Baker
