“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
~Margaret Mead
Linda Collet, Adele Pincock, and Mark Savee are “The Virgin Three”. They are three of the five sponsors of a Referendum, filed in opposition to what they considered to be a very unwise and uncalled for zoning Ordinance passed by the Virgin Utah Town Council in November of 2014. The council passed this ordinance in spite of vocal opposition by its citizens, in spite of a unanimous recommendation against it by the Virgin Planning and Zoning Commission, and in spite of the concerns expressed by the town’s own attorney.
The Right to Petition one’s government is guaranteed by the United States Constitution, the Utah State Constitution, and goes all the way back to the signing of the Magna Carta, 800 years ago this June.
In spite of the "Virgin Three's" faith and confidence in the protections guaranteed as citizen legislators, they now find themselves in a desperate legal battle, accused of defamation by the owner of the property that is the subject of the Ordinance. Not only does this suit attack them for speech protected by the First Amendment, it attempts to nullify a Referendum and in so doing disenfranchise the rights of all the citizens who signed the petition for Referendum. The suit has also been brought against 20 unamed "Does", which could be anybody else in town who has chosen to express their opinion about this issue.
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
~Edmund Burke
Please help the Virgin Three in their legal defense against this suit. This case may drag on through many appeals and they have few financial resources at their disposal. Any funds left over from the aftermath of this unfortunate case will go to VirginsFuture.org, which is dedicated to preserving the rights of the town’s citizens to be heard by their council and mayor, defending the General Plan, and ensuring that their little rustic town becomes all that its citizens hope that it could be.
