Violet was found to be a RB1 gene carrier before she was born. This gene leads to a high probability of retinoblastoma developing in utero or shortly after birth. She was officially diagnosed when she was a day old and had her first laser treatment at 3 days old.
Retinoblastoma is an eye cancer that usually found in children under the age of two. It is treatable with a five year survival rate of 94%.
To give Violet the best chance at beating the cancer and saving her life, her parents Alena and Chris made the difficult decision to separate their family so that Violet could receive specialized treatment in Toronto that was not available in Western Canada.
This was not Alena and Chris' first time dealing with a child in need of medical care. Their first child, Ky, was born 8 weeks premature. Now a rambunctious, healthy three year old, they had an idea of the emotional roller coaster ride they were about to take.
They made several life changes before Vy was born, the biggest being the sale of their acreage dream home and moving in with Chris' generous parents. This way there would be extra hands to help with Ky while Alena and the baby were in Toronto for treatment.
You could not ask to meet a kinder, sweeter, giving family. Vy steals the hearts of all she meets, and we want to give her the best start to a wonderful future.
What are our goals of the campaign?
1) To help alleviate the extra costs and take some of the burden off of the shoulders of this young family. While some of the costs associated with Vy's treatment were covered through Alberta Health Services, not all were.
2) To raise awareness of the need for a treatment centre in Western Canada. If we surpass our goal amount, half of the extra funds raised will be donated to help bring an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner to the Stollery in Edmonton.
3) To provide Violet a bright future. If we surpass our goal amount, half of the extra funds raised will go towards a RESP for Violet.
Thank you for supporting Vy's Eyes! Your donation, big or small, is most appreciated.
