LearningRx TBI Cognitive Skills Training
Donation protected
A few months ago we learned about LearningRx and the cognitive skills training that they do. We researched and realized that though they’re often known for working with struggling children, they also have worked with TBI patients. We wavered back and forth on whether we should check them out or not, and then finally decided to at least see what they would recommend. After a thorough assessment and evaluation they identified some areas of improvement that they thought they could help Drew with. Their program is intended to push you further than you would push yourself cognitively, and therefore build new pathways in the brain for those functions and skills. They likened it to a personal trainer at the gym: yes, you can do the exercises on your own, but with a personal trainer you typically get better results. So this is a program for a personal trainer for your brain! We definitely think this could help Drew further his cognitive healing. Now, the reason we are writing here is that this is not an inexpensive option - and, of course, it’s not covered by insurance at all. Thankfully we were able to work with the Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Association and were able to get two different grants to help cover some of the cost of the training. However, the remainder of the cost is still $3500. We feel that this is a really good opportunity and something that we are excited to try. We believe the two biggest areas that LearningRx will help improve are working/short term memory and processing speeds. With improvements in these areas, we believe that Drew will have a better quality of life and be better equipped to find employment opportunities. Though it is hard to be open and ask for help when our society puts so much emphasis on being independent - a quote from Joni Eareckson Tada helped us decide to create this fundraiser. Thank you for any amount you can give. Any amount will help reduce the financial strain. All amounts donated will go directly to paying for Drew’s training with LearningRx. We greatly appreciate your support!
“I have an interesting perspective on depending on others. I think it gives people a chance to serve. And I’m not so much big on independence, as I am on interdependence. I’m not talking about co-dependency, I’m talking about giving people the opportunity to practicing love with its sleeves rolled up.” -Joni Eareckson Tada
