Here is her story:
In Sept 2023 Maria (Lisa) noticed swelling in her neck lymph nodes; after multiple doctor appointments in Maui over the next several months yielded no answers, she decided to go to the emergency room on December 15th, 2023. Based on MRI and CT scans and a biopsy performed at the ER, Maria (Lisa) was initially diagnosed with a rare form of sinus cancer called esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) or olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB). This was later to be re-diagnosed as alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.
A core care team was immediately assembled to assist Maria (Lisa) in researching options for cancer treatment, insurance coverage and strategizing how to arrange the best possible care for this rare form of cancer. Lisa’s care team consists of Michael and Andy (Lisa’s brothers), Brigid (Andy's partner), Jon (Lisa’s partner), Veronica (Lisa's mother), and Zachary (Lisa's son). Because there is very limited cancer expertise in Maui, Lisa and Jon immediately flew together to NYC. It was necessary for Maria (Lisa) to travel to the mainland for expert cancer care, and she needed to travel as soon as possible due to rapid tumor growth. Research indicated that Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Mt. Sinai (both in NY), MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore were top options to consider. Ultimately, New York City was identified as the best location to pursue treatment, given the combination of top-tier cancer care and Lisa’s established support group of family and friends willing to help in NYC.
