Nelson County Sheriff's Office
2015 k9 Unit Community Initiative
It wasn't magic or overnight but through dedication and an ongoing commitment to the citizens of Nelson county that the Nelson CountySheriff's Office will be implementing a new K9 Unit.
Members of the Nelson County Sheriff's Office have spoken with the experts, done their research and contacted several providers of Police K9's and Handler Training Courses for departments and communities like ours and have narrowed their search to the Professionals at K9 Working Dogs International. Deputy Daniel Jones has been selected after a thorough interview and evaluation process to attend their prestigious, federally licensed and nationally accredited Police K9 handlers school were he will train with his new K9Partner to ensure an ideal fit for our community.
"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to work with the Nelson County Sheriff's Office and Deputy Jones, on this initiative to support the efforts in keeping Nelson County a safe and pleasant place to live, work and visit. It is a great feeling to see how a community like
Nelson County is stepping up, getting involved, and coming together to make a positive impact for good." - David Kiewel, Training Director at K9 Working Dogs International.
Deputy Jones has served the Nelson County community for 1 year but has been an active in law enforcement for over 10. " Our mission is to eliminate drug trafficking, sales, distribution and use of illegal drugs in Nelson County. We want to maintain a safe school
environment and to achieve a drug free zone."- Captain Robertson, Nelson County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Jones new K9 partner will be imported from Germany and will be fully trained and certified to detect illegal drugs with pin point accuracy.
The Nelson County Sheriff's Office has put policy in place for this program however lacks the necessary funding to move forward. The cost for the Dog & necessary training comes to $14,695. The Department has been awarded $2,500 through the K9 Leap Grant which helps offset some of the related start up costs. The total goal is to raise $16,946.30 which will also cover equipment and ensure success of the program.
