Sara's Medical Fund

Almost two months ago, I was on my way to Mexico to celebrate the wedding of my friend Sara to her fiancee Court. My husband and I were sitting in the airport, ready for a relaxing week in the sun, when I got a text from Court saying that Sara had a heart attack.

As shocking as it was, it was just the beginning. I would talk to Court several times over the next few days, and gradually the story came together:   About four hours into the  flight  to Mexico, Sara had a heart attack on the airplane. Thankfully they were still close to land and there was a cardiologist on the plane that recognized what was happening, and they were able to divert to an emergency landing in Louisiana. She made it to the hospital, but her heart stopped twice during her angioplasty, and the doctors had to revive her before they could finish the procedure and put a stent in her heart.

After three harrowing days in the ICU, determined to join her friends, family, and future husband in Mexico, Sara was cleared to fly again.  On April 18, 2015, Sara was able to walk down the aisle on the beach in Mexico, and was married to her amazing husband Court. I have never seen so many tears, or met so many grateful people, nor have I been to a wedding that was more of a celebration of what it means to love and be loved.

Sara struggled during the wedding with her new regimen of medications and had trouble adjusting to her newfound medical condition, so they decided to forgo the honeymoon and come back to Seattle. Immediately upon her return, complications landed her back the hospital for three days, and she has been constantly working ever since towards a balance as her heart heals.

While she is still adjusting and is on her way to recovery,  the medical bills are starting to arrive.  Luckily she does have insurance, but as many of you know, it only goes so far in the case of medical event of this magnitude. The ongoing costs of cardiac rehabilitation, doctor’s appointments, and medications keep coming, and the out of pocket expenses are starting to add up . As you can imagine, she had no idea that this is the way she and Court would be starting their life together.

There are struggles that lie ahead for Sara's rehabilitation and recovery, and she will have them for the rest of her life. I started this campaign to help with mounting costs, in hopes that one of those struggles won't be a financial hole that could take them years to recover from.

Thanks for reading, and for helping Sara as she moves on from this. Every little bit helps!
