This is our neice, Lois Andrea O. Estrada. 4 yrs old. She’s been in a sleeping state since July 23, 2019 due to swelling of the brain. The doctors final diagnosis was Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) which is kind of similar to Lupus- Auto immune Disease. MRI showed that her brain upto the spinal cord is inflamed that cause her sleeping state up to now.
She started having flu last Saturday, July 20, 2019 and was brought to the center to have her checked-up. Even with medicines, her fever didn’t go away, so her mom decided to bring her to Manila and get another check-up.
Monday, June 22, 2019
She was brought to the hospital and they said that she has high-bacterial UTI because she’s experiencing pain in the abdomen and has high fever. With new medicines to take, they are advised to go home.

At 2AM, she was rushed back to the hospital(St. Luke’s Quezon City) because she’s having a seizure. The doctors said that it must be because of her very high fever, so she was confined and given paracetamol to lower her fever. She was still conscious in the morning, but she cannot recognize her family, and she cannot remember even her name. In the afternoon, she was given another dose of paracetamol for her fever. She slept that afternoon, and up to this date, she has not woken up yet. The initial diagnosis was Japanese Encephalitis but we are thankful that it is not JE since there is no definite cure for that illness.

The final diagnosis was released and it was ADEM. Good thing there is cure for this RARE CONDITION but not guaranteed that Lois will immediately wake up and go back to her normal self. She’s also given steroids- which costs more or less 100k each shot- to heal her inflamed brain and spinal cord which has side effect that can lower her immune system so the doctors decided to transfer her to PICU(Pediatric ICU) from a normal ICU to closely monitor her condition and no visitors are allowed to have close interaction with her to avoid another viruses that she might caught again that can give her complications.

Last July 28, the diagnosis was changed to ACUTE NECROTIZING ENCYPHALOPATHY(ANE) since her liver was also affected. As of now, Lois is not reacting to steroids. Shes still not waking up and her brain are still swollen. The doctor advised us that they will undergo a procedure that they will filter her blood(similar to dialysis) to remove impurities but her veins in the neck are too small for that procedure so they did not continue. So the doctors will do the last process, THE IVIG which is an overall booster. Praying that Lois will respond to this meds.

Lois showed some improvements by moving her arms and her eyes were half opened. Hoping that this will continue so she can wake up soon!
She is such a brave girl. She’s not responsive now but we know that sooner or later she will wake up and say hi to all of us again.
We are raising funds and asking for donations to support Lois’ medication.
Our family will be forever grateful for any help or support you’ve given us in this tough time. We are hoping and praying very hard to have our baby girl back in her healthy state again, and we hope you could help us.
From her loving family and Prayer Warriors ❤

Info of the diseases diagnosed:
1. Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis(ADEM) is characterized by a brief but widespread attack of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord that damages myelin – the protective covering of nerve fibers. ADEM often follows viral or bacterial infections, or less often, vaccination for measles, mumps, or rubella. The symptoms of ADEM appear rapidly, beginning with encephalitis-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headache, nausea and vomiting, and in the most severe cases, seizures and coma.
2. Acute necrotizing encephalopathy of childhood (ANEC) is a disease characterized by respiratory or gastrointestinal infection and high fever accompanying with rapid alteration of consciousness and seizures. This disease is nearly exclusively seen in East Asian infants and children who had previously been completely healthy. Serial magnetic resonance imaging examinations have demonstrated symmetric lesions involving the thalami, brainstem cerebellum, and white matter in this disease. The condition accompanies a poor prognosis with high morbidity and mortality rates.
