Reviving WUMC: the 225-year-old historical church

“Reviving Waldwick United Methodist Church: the 225-year-old historical church!”

Our church, Waldwick UMC, is a historical church and the oldest landmark in Waldwick, NJ. It was founded in 1797 and has a continuous ministry of 225 years as the “Mother of Bergen Methodism.” The church itself is 122 years older than the Borough of Waldwick. To give a little background of Waldwick, in 1886, the Orvil Township was formed from parts of the Ho-Ho-Kus and Washington Townships. Then, in 1919, Orvil Township became the Borough of Waldwick.

For the past 225 years, Waldwick UMC has continuously served the Waldwick community through many kinds of activities and ministries, such as Fish & Chips Dinner, Strawberry Festivals, Christmas Fairs, Music and Pasta Dinner, Food-Drive, Basket Ministry, Ministry of Learning English-Spanish, Love-in-Act: Soup-Ministry, Sports Ministries, and many more. Also, at one point, our church building had been used as a school of Waldwick when the public-school building in Waldwick needed to rebuild.

Words aren’t enough to describe how deeply connected Waldwick UMC has been with the people and community of Waldwick. Evidently, 225 years of history is essentially 225 years of a continuous relationship between the church and the community. People of Waldwick were baptized, got married, and had funeral services in our church. Our church has been their home, shelter, school, family, precious memories, and history.

Unfortunately, after the pandemic, our church has gone through financial hardships just like many other churches, businesses, and families. The members of the congregation are also struggling due to financial hardships due to the pandemic. Despite the financial struggles the individual members have been facing and the church has been facing, the members of the church worked hard so that the church won’t close.

We cannot let the church close because of financial difficulties. This church has an important, historical tie with the Waldwick community and is an essential part of the Waldwick community. We cannot lose this precious, historical church. We believe that God can continue to use this church for his purpose, and we hope that God brings us hope, strength, and revival through the GoFundMe Fundraising Campaign. Please pray for this church and this community.
