Walk 7 for Yemen

We are raising money for the current humanitarian crisis in Yemen, through Unicef UK, and will be walking 7 marathons in 7 days (20th-26th July) in and around the South Downs area.

The situation in Yemen is truly horrendous and the need for aid is urgent. Since conflict in Yemen escalated in 2015 due to Saudi intervention, the country faces spiralling economic, governance, health, education and judicial systems. Further exacerbating the problem, COVID-19 is now spreading rapidly as well as an outbreak of Cholera and their already dwindling health services cannot withstand this added pressure.

In order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 we are told to wash our hands, however with only one third of Yemen’s population being connected to a piped water network, this is extremely difficult for most people living there. 60% of the population have to walk at least 30 mins to collect water - often across dangerous areas (risk of landmines and protection risks). They also don't have the same options for distance learning, which many UK children and schools have been relying on throughout this difficult time. Self isolating and social distancing are impossible for some families due to cramped living conditions, making it easier for the virus to spread. Unicef are working hard to combat all of these issues, however only 4% of the requirements have been met so far, which means there is a long way to go.

We feel very strongly that we must do something to help.

In addition to the walks, we have organised some events to take place in the evenings throughout the week. These events will vary from fitness classes to a virtual concert featuring renowned professional actors and singers. Each class will have a minimum donation fee, we will provide more info on this in due course. These events will take place virtually. 

It is worth noting, throughout the seven days we will be maintaining social distancing rules due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
