WALK A MILE: Mile 4 - Serbia

MILE 4 - SERBIA
In Serbia, I walked with Mirjana. She lives in a Roma settlement in the capital city of Belgrade. Roma people, formerly referred to with the pejorative "gypsy," are highly persecuted, unwelcome in schools, and virtually unemployable. With the help of CWS, Mirjana is learning to read for the first time to gain skills for employment.
QUICK FACTS:
- The Roma are one of the most marginalized ethnic groups in Serbia. Roma face drastic inequalities, transferred from one generation to the next in a perpetuating cycle of poverty.
- Roma have arrived in Serbia in several migrational waves, including a large group who were internally displaced from the war in Kosovo.
- Mirjana attends an adult education program, funded by CWS, which provides literacy classes and social support free of charge.
- By completing this literacy course, Roma women can receive a elementary school certificate, qualifying them to work. A job allows them to be independent, support a family, and break the cycle of poverty for their children.
- $19 funds a month of literacy classes for one woman!
All donations will directly benefit Roma families through the programs of CWS. CWS is a US-based nonprofit that transforms communities around the world through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement, and disaster. CWS has operated effectively for over 70 years.
