WALK A MILE: Mile 5 - Uganda

Tax deductible
MILE 5 - UGANDA

In northern Uganda, I met a woman named Alice who opened my eyes to the horrific suffering that many women face during childbirth. Due to inadequate medical care, Alice lost her child during labor and was left incontinent. Abandoned by her husband and ostracized by her community, Alice spent twelve years in isolation. Finally, she met the women of Terrewode, a nonprofit that provides life-changing surgery to fistula survivors. Terrewode gave her new life!
QUICK FACTS:
  • Obstetric fistula is a small hole that develops from obstructed, prolonged labor. Most often, the mother loses the baby, is left incontinent, and is abandoned.
  • Aprox. 2 million women globally have untreated obstetric fistula with almost 100,000 new cases each year.
  • Terrewode built the first dedicated fistula hospital in Uganda to provide surgical treatment to women in East Africa.
  • Rehabilitation includes physical and emotional therapy as well as skills training. Terrewode teaches women to make goat's milk soap to generate income and reintegrate into society.
  • $35 funds one month's supply of soap making materials. $300 helps fund a fistula surgery. (Full surgery, recovery, and treatment is $1200).

All donations directly benefit Terrewode Women's Fund, a US-based 501c3 nonprofit supporting fistula survivors in Uganda. Terrewode aims to build community capacity to transform conventional healthcare and economic systems to improve the status and livelihood of women and girls in relation to maternal and child health.
