Mickey completed the climb on Saturday 17th June in roughly 5 hours and 15 minutes.

On the 17th June 2023, Mickey Bushell will be ditching his wheelchair and walking the Wrekin, on his hands!

Mickey is one of few people from Shropshire to have won Paralympic gold and been a world record holder. Born with lumbar sacral spinal agenesis congenital paraplegia, Mickey is missing the last 7 vertebrae above the coccyx. He competes in wheelchair racing, category T53, meaning that people in this class have full use of their arms but have no or limited trunk function. Further to this, he has been honoured with a golden post-box in Telford, an honorary doctorate in Sports from Wolverhampton University and was appointed MBE for services to athletics!

Mickey has lived all his life in Telford. Despite being able to see the Wrekin from his bedroom window, and despite all his heroics on the track and various awards, he has never been to the top of the Wrekin. This we intend to put right on the 17th June starting at 10.00am. Mickey will walk up the Wrekin on his hands. He will have a backup team with him every step of the way, and anyone is welcome to join him for all or any part of the journey. We expect it to take him around 6 hours to complete the climb and descent.

So, what are we raising funds for?

Mickey runs 8 week long, free of charge training courses for wheelchair users on a regular basis, to help users to improve their fitness, strength, mobility, and confidence. The Academy courses are in person, small group sessions held in Telford, but of course, the facilities are not free, and we want to continue to be able to offer these courses free of charge and fully funded to those who need them.
