Walk this Way to a Wider Education

Hello, my name is Timmy long and I am co-host of the Two Norries  podcast.

My educational journey started within the prison system at the age of 32 years old where I learned to read and write. In prison, I completed the equivalent of the Junior Cert (a FETAC Level 3), followed by a Level 4.

I then went on to St John's College and completed a FETAC level 5 and 6 awards, which was required for the enrolment of third-level education. During my time in this higher level of education studying Construction Management, I received funding from the college so that I could be assessed by an educational psychologist. From this assessment, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and my entire way of thinking changed at that moment.

This diagnosis helped me understand a lot and change a core belief system from childhood, that I was stupid, inadequate and thick. From my experience, I understand the importance of early intervention and the essential requirement for children to be assessed as early as possible; so they do not have to go through the same unnecessary journey as me and many more that I know.

It is every child's right to get an education that meets their requirements and their level of ability. The future education of these kids lies within our communities and it is our responsibility as people who care -  to give every child the opportunity to try and meet their full potential.

We are raising money to provide educational psychology assessments that will help to identify and diagnose the needs of children who are struggling within the education system. With the given recommendations, we are hoping to help change the course of at least some of their lives. We are starting with three schools in the Knocknaheeny area: St Marys on the Hill Primary school, Terence MacSwiney Community College and Churchfield Padre Pio Primary School.

This is our chance, as a community to come together and raise funds for these kids, who need these assessments to further their education and life skills. It will also enable parents, carers, teachers and others who work within the school environments to understand and support the many kids who having learning differences.

Each school will get 10 assessments and feedback communication from the assigned Educational Psychologists. I want to thank the following four psychologists: Stephen Bourke, Elaine Milner, Dr Elaine McCarthy and Dr Clara O’Byrne.
The costs for these assessments, follow-up information and services could cost up to €24,000.  I urge every one of you to do what you can to help change a child's life and give them this very important identification around their learning differences.

In order to help raise the money, we are going to walk!

The walk we have chosen is in Co Kerry, near Kenmare and you are all very, very welcome. It is on the 14th of May, 2022 at 10 am. We want this to be accessible to all so we welcome you to join at whatever stage suits your needs. We will have more details, which we will send to you once you have expressed an interest.

I am joined on this journey by Georgie Cooney from DyslexiaSpell who is also the Cork Coordinator for the Dyslexia Association of Ireland. She is helping me to get this project off the ground - to ensure that every child gets their learning needs met. Georgie is extremely passionate about trying to provide wider opportunities for those who might be stuck in what might seem like a never-ending cycle. Her 20 years of working as a teacher and dyslexia specialist has been instrumental in the development and administration aspects of this project.

Also, a past pupil of Churchfield Primary  School and a northside businessman -  Paul McCarthy has donated his time and organisation skills to help this project succeed.

Thank you very much.
