Walking to Rome
Walking to Rome:
At the end of April we are starting a walk of approximately 2000km from Canterbury to Rome, following the ancient Via Francigena. It is likely to take at least 2 months. We are using our walk to support education projects for Syrian refugees. The money we raise will go to a charity in Lebanon, Tuyoor Al Amal (‘Birds of Hope’) - www.tuyooralamal.com . This charity was set up by Syrian refugees and is for Syrian refugees in Tripoli, which is the poorest city in Lebanon. They are providing a full education to over 2,000 children from reception to Grade 12, the final year of high school.
It costs around USD $150 (approximately GBP £115) for each child to be educated for one year. The costs have to be found from external donors every year. The children are not just learning the basics, they are getting a Lebanese curriculum education. In addition, coming to school helps to keep these children safe; many of them would otherwise be on the streets and trying to hustle money in any way they can just to help their families put food on the table. The schools help to support the community in any way they can to give these children a fighting chance of having a better life through education. They need everything – books, resources, sports equipment - so anything you are able to give will make a difference. £10 a month fully covers the cost for one child for the whole school year.
Because we know this organisation, we know any money you are able to give will go directly to the school and help improve the lives of many children. We have an arrangement in place for the Altenburg Foundation, a registered UK charity, to pass the monies raised directly to Tuyoor Al Amal; this means that donations from UK tax payers will qualify for Gift Aid.
We are really excited to think about how many children can be helped through our walk.
Thank you very much for your support.
