John Freeman Walls Historic Site Fundraiser

The John Freeman Walls Historic  Site and Underground Railroad Museum is located on land that served as a terminal for the Underground Railroad in which fugitive slave John Freeman Walls and his wife, a white slave owner's daughter Jane King Walls homesteaded at the end of their parlous journey to freedom.  

Their love story which is documented in the novel, The Road That Led to Somewhere by Dr. Bryan E. Walls stood against hatred, racism, fear, transcended color and the inhumane laws of the time.  Jane King Walls was a white women of Scottish and Irish descent and John was a black slave from the Guinea Coast of Africa. Jane's husband Daniel was the slave owner of, yet brother-like friend to John (another time transcending relationship). When Daniel was on his deathbed he entrusted his wife and children to the care of his friend John.  Eventually John and Jane fell in love. Jane being white certainly did not have to, but choose to run through the woods by night and hide by day along side John,  a journey spanning from Rockingham County North Carolina to the grounds of what is now our Historic Site.

They made this incredible journey with LOVE & MUTUAL respect as their catalyst! The brave result of their love highlights the best of humanity! Our museums's mission is to fuel those same attributes in those who we tour by sharing what has been accomplished in the past and still can be. We aim to have our guests leave fueled by the proven power of mutual respect and love so they can take it into the world and one person at a time begin to spread it. 

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, we are unable to open for tours this summer. This is the first time in over 30 years that we have been unable to provide our unique type of enrichment to the world.  In addition, since we are a federally registered non profit organization and operate with no outside assistance it has become increasingly difficult  to keep up all necessary repairs, and expenses.  

We will be using the funds towards major areas of need at the museum. Roofing repairs on the main log cabin, siding and structural integrity repairs on the Clifford E, John Graves Simcoe and the Cafe Building.  Smaller projects include front wooden fencing and a new more secure front gate. 

This historic site pairs history and hope, and in the effort to preserve this unique piece of history we humbly ask you to partner with us in donating to a museum whose mission is exactly what our world needs now.
