Hi, my name is Diane May and I am raising funds for Wanda Pearson, who is like family to me.
Wanda is a legally blind grandmother who lost all of her material belongings in a fire on March 28, 2022 in San Leandro, CA.
Wanda had gone to the pharmacy, leaving her son Raydell and grandson De’Valya at home, in their apartment asleep. Raydell was the first to smell smoke and rushed to check on his mother and realized that she was not in the apartment. He saw smoke coming from the living room sofa and grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and began to spray the sofa and surrounding area. After he thought he had the situation under control, he opened the sliding glass doors in the living room of their second story apartment to air out the smoke. The area burst into flames, leaving Raydell trapped on the second-floor balcony of the apartment building. He began screaming back inside the sliding glass door and was able to awaken his son De’Valya. De’Valya awoke and had to slide on his belly to the front door to escape the flames. Raydell was rescued by firefighters from the balcony.
Most of you have probably not had the experience of a home fire. I have, and I totally understand and empathize with the trauma of that loss. Although you are thankful to God that no one was injured or killed, your sense of loss is painfully devastating.

Adding to the stress of the fire, Wanda lost her job during the COVID pandemic. Her computer that was specially equipped with software to meet her visual needs was destroyed.
Unfortunately, Wanda did not have renters’ insurance and has no means to recover any of the belongings that were destroyed.
