In January the Willis family heard the words that rock so many families each week. “You have cancer.” At the time it was thought to be isolated, this is when bad news turned into worse news. The scans came back, and as they sat in the doctor’s office listening to all of their future plans being ripped apart, Jason was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer. Jason and his family got the worse news possible that led them to a crossroad in life that was not planned. They made the difficult decision to start his battle with cancer. Chemotherapy would be aggressive and very hard on his body. They remained confident in the plan, and Jason stated that “I know whom I believed, and I am convinced that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.”
In March Jason had his first milestone for phase one of treatment. The Willis family were officially beyond halfway, four treatments down and two more to go. The next ten days would be very rough but knowing that they were halfway there was very encouraging. The midpoint scans shown that the treatment was working and causing “marked improvements.” The 6cm lymph nodes had shrunk to normal size and the bones were scarring as they should. That was a blessing of light and hope in the midst of such darkness and gloom.
In June Jason and his family were facing the final scan reading day. Jason stated, “unless you have faced or walked with someone who has faced life threatening disease, then scanexity probably does not register with you.” As the Willis family anxiously waited to hear the results from his final scan, he was speechless when his doctor spoke the words your scan showed “NED”. What is “NED”? NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE!!! Currently there is no cure for prostate cancer, but no evidence of disease was great to hear. The Willis family began to see a glimpse of light in such a dark time.
Which bring us all to today the Willis family returned to the doctor to have another scan. As they sat and awaited the results to say they had scanexity was an understatement. The doctor gave them more bad news, hearing the words “your cancer is back” is a devastating feeling. The Willis family were hoping to never have to face this again, chemotherapy treatments are very hard on your body. They will be more aggressive the second time around. Jason has begun his second round of chemotherapy making him much sicker this time. As battling cancer was not hard enough, Jason lost his job. The Willis family is faced with another devasting circumstance, but the Willis family is surrounded by a great support system. God is with us always, He is standing beside us every step of the way, and we are trusting Him.
We are asking our community to be the hands and feet of Christ by lifting the Willis family up in prayer. If you feel led to donate to the Willis family, please do so at GoFundMe.
