Warriors Give a DAM! (Chris Marlowe Flood Relief)
You may have heard about the devastating flooding that hit Nebraska on March 15, 2019.
It was called “the most widespread flooding devastation we’ve had in our state in the last half-century.”
The destruction of the Spencer Dam (caused by record ice jams and flooding) took out the rural water pipeline that supplied Boyd and Holt County with water.
Thousands of people were affected. One of these was Westside High School Class of 1991 graduate Christopher Marlowe, owner of Marlowe Family Farms in Anoka, Nebraska (Boyd County) in northeast Nebraska.
A group of '91 Warriors is raising money to help Christopher. The goal is to raise $5,000. The money will give him a jumpstart on one of the flood recovery projects. He's a hands-on guy who can do incredible things, but money is needed to help.
The specific project is to rebuild a dam on the farm property in conjunction with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service–Nebraska (NCRS). The NCRS is picking up 75% of the cost, but Christopher has to cover the other 25%.
The bulldozer is expected to arrive the third week of August, so time (and money) is of the essence. Every little bit helps.
From Christopher:
It's not easy to ask for help. This is a project that benefits everyone downstream of us. Every one of these little catchment dams that is repaired will in the future help hold water in the hills. Reducing downstream flooding, help to keep the highlands hydrated, provide wildlife habitat and of course recreation for people. The pond will be stocked with fish once it is full. I'm told that at one time "it was the best bass pond in the county!" I'm sure it can be again!
