Team Insight
Warwick Boring is a highly motivated team of 50+ students and alumni from the University of Warwick that formed in 2020. We came together to design and innovate tunnelling technology that centres around speed, sustainability and cost effectiveness. We raised £200,000, designed and built a tunnelling machine prototype in 11 months. We were chosen as 1 of 12 finalists from 400 teams worldwide to attend Elon Musk's first tunnelling competition in Las Vegas, where we competed against the likes of MIT and TUM (The Technical University of Munich). We placed in the top 4 and were the only UK team to have made it to the finals.

This year we are continuing to further innovate, push boundaries and challenge traditional construction and tunnelling methods. Our primary objective is to compete and win the 2023 Not-a-Boring competition, hosted by SpaceX and The Boring Company, and the 2022 European Tunnelling Week Competition this September.

This continued ambition has been recognised through our recent successes in being listed as finalists for E&T Innovation Awards: Future Mobility Category, NCE Tunnelling Awards Tunnelling Team of the Year & Young Tunneller of the Year!

Mission: Our aim is to shape the transportation of tomorrow through the development of innovative and more sustainable technology.

Vision: We are working towards winning the most prestigious tunnelling competition in the world, hosted by Elon Musk's "The Boring Company" and "Space X".

Values: Inclusion and sustainability are at the heart of all we do. With 3 female team leads we are big advocates for equality within the engineering sector.

With an expected 68% of the world population to be living in urban areas by 2050, we believe it to be necessary to find new solutions to optimise space while reducing the environmental impact of transportation; a shift of infrastructure to go 3D and utilising underground space is the solution.

Our Technology
The technology team have consistently pushed the boundaries of tunnelling innovation to provide a solution which is fast, cost-effective and modular in creation.

The TBM was developed via the ‘Design for Manufacturing’ approach, ensuring successful scalability in future commercial projects.

To reduce our carbon footprint, we are carrying over and reusing as many components as possible from our machine and sourcing as many new parts as possible from local suppliers.

Publicity
Due to our remarkable achievements in just over a year, our work has been recognised by top media outlets and senior professionals in the tunnelling industry, namely:

Your help!
After a successful journey in The Boring Company’s 2021 competition, we are underway with our innovation and new machine design. We have already submitted this new design and entered both the 2022 European Tunnelling Competition and the 2023 ‘Not-A-Boring Competition'! With our upcoming competitions edging ever closer, we rely on the support of people like yourself who want a future with better technology for our planet, who want to encourage young talent and innovation in STEM whilst also supporting a richly diverse team that will be the future engineers of tomorrow.
  • 1 of the 12 team finalists
  • Top 3% out of 400 teams
  • >90% of the safety checks completed

Through supporting the team, you will have the unique opportunity to play a part in our story. The majority of your support will be going towards:
  • Purchasing of machine components, manufacturing of parts and the build phase
  • Sub-system and full scale testing
  • Transport and logistical costs of the machine

If your company is interested in becoming one of our title sponsors, with exclusive benefits such as your logo being featured on our machine, please get in touch.
