In Gambia hebben de meeste huishoudens, ook in de dichtbevolkte stedelijke gebieden, geen kraan. Water is nodig om te drinken, eten te koken en hygiëne. Om water te halen moeten ze vaak ver lopen, lang in de rij staan en sjouwen met jerrycans en emmers.
Wij zijn o.a. bevriend met Yaya Sajnia. Hij heeft een grote tuin waar hij bomen kweekt, die van origine in Gambia voorkomen, maar door akkerbouw enz. in hun bestaan bedreigd worden. De waterput is kapot door storm. Wij willen hem helpen met watervoorziening en dat combineren met een tapkraan, waar de hele buurt altijd kan beschikken over gratis, schoon water.

In Gambia, most households, even in densely populated urban areas, do not have a tap. Water is needed for drinking, cooking and hygiene. To get water, they often have to walk a long way, stand in line for a long time and carry jerry cans and buckets.
We are friends with Yaya Sajnia. We are friends with Yaya Sajnia. Yaya has a large garden where he grows trees, which originate from Gambia, but are threatened in their existence by agriculture. The well was destroyed by a storm. We want to help him with water supply and combine that with a tap, where the entire neighborhood always has free, clean water.

Wij zijn Anoushka, Elly, Nol en Ron: vier Nederlanders met een warm hart voor Gambia, Afrika. In Gambia zijn wij bevriend met Yaya Sajnia.
Yaya heeft een compound in een dichtbevolkte woonwijk in Serekunda, waar hij zelf in een traditioneel rond lemen hutje woont. Daaromheen de ruïnes van wat ooit een groter huis was, met paardenstallen en een grote tuin. Hij leidt ons graag rond en vertelt over zijn planten en bomen. Bij elk weet hij te vertellen over de kwaliteiten van de boom en de eventuele medicinale krachten. In Gambia wordt veel gekapt ten behoeve van akkerbouw. Daardoor komen sommige soorten bomen steeds minder voor of dreigen zelfs uit te sterven. Hij kweekt en deelt/verkoopt zaden en zaailingen om zo een bijdrage te leveren aan de biodiversiteit. Van sommige zaden of bladeren maakt hij medicinale poeders of thee. Tevens deelt hij zijn kennis op vele manieren met de jongere generatie.

Anoushka, buurvrouw: “Zoals Yaya al zegt: we vinden het belangrijk om ons eigen onafhankelijke watersysteem te hebben. We leven in een droog gebied en de woestijn komt steeds dichterbij; bomen en planten zijn absolute noodzaak om een leefomgeving in stand te houden waar mens en dier kunnen bestaan.
In het kleine stukje Gambia waar wij wonen is wel een waterleidingnetwerk, wat wordt beheerd door NAWEC. NAWEC staat voor National Water & Electricity Company en is opgericht in 1996. Sinds de oprichting en bouw van het netwerk is er een explosieve groei van toerisme en is het systeem bij lange na niet toereikend om de druk op te bouwen die het nodig heeft om alle plekken van water te voorzien. In november gaan de hotels open, worden de zwembaden gevuld en wordt er massaal gedoucht. De dorpen rond de kuststreek zitten soms weken zonder water. Wij zitten dan ’s nachts bij de kraan met een teiltje de druppels op te vangen, want tussen twaalf en zes is er nog een klein beetje druk.
Een put is dan een uitkomst, of nog beter; een borehole. Niet alleen voor Yaya en zijn plantjes maar ook voor alle gezinnen in de buurt. Ik heb nu een paar keer aan den lijve ondervonden wat het is om lange tijd zonder water te zitten en ben er achter gekomen dat het levensbehoefte nummer 1 is.”
De waterput is kapot sinds een groot noodweer over Yaya's compound trok. Nu heeft hij zelf geen waterbron meer. Hij sjouwt met jerrycans water dat hij mag tappen bij de buren, maar dat is loodzwaar en natuurlijk nooit genoeg. Daardoor staan er bomen te verdrogen of dragen geen vruchten/zaden. Net als Yaya hechten wij belang aan de natuur, de bomen en de biodiversiteit. Daarom vinden wij het zo mooi zoals hij daarmee bezig is en hoe hij dat ook uitdraagt aan de jongere generatie in Gambia.
Wij willen Yaya en de hele buurt helpen door middel van deze crowdfunding. De beste oplossing voor de watervoorziening is een boorgat, daarmee kan grondwater opgepompt worden vanuit een diepte waar dat altijd voorradig is. Tevens is het veiliger en duurzamer dan een put, zoals hij voorheen had.
Aan de buitenkant van de schutting komt een tapkraan waar mensen uit de buurt ten allen tijde water kan tappen!
Ons doel is
1500 voor de watervoorziening, dit willen we in 2020 realiseren

Yaya has a compound where he lives in a traditional round mud hut. Around it the ruins of what was once a bigger house with horse stables and a large garden. He likes to show us around and talk about his plants and trees. He knows about the qualities and possible medicinal powers of each of them. In The Gambia lots of trees are cut down for farming. As a result, some types of trees are on the decline or even in danger of dying out. He grows and shares/sells seeds and seedlings to contribute to biodiversity. He makes medicinal powders or teas from some of the seeds and leaves. He also shares his knowledge with the younger generation in many ways.

Anoushka, neighbor: “As Yaya says: we think it is important to have our own independent water system. We live in a dry area and the desert is getting closer; trees and plants are an absolute necessity to maintain a living environment where humans and animals can exist.
In the small part of The Gambia where we live there is a water supply network, which is managed by NAWEC. NAWEC stands for National Water & Electricity Company and was founded in 1996. Since the establishment and construction of the network there has been an explosive growth in tourism and the system is by no means sufficient to build up the pressure it needs to provide places with water. In November the hotels will open, the swimming pools will be filled and a massive shower will take place. The villages around the coast are sometimes without water for weeks. At night we sit at the tap with a bowl to catch the drops, because between twelve and six there is still a little bit of pressure.
A well is a solution, or even better; a borehole. Not only for Yaya and its plants but also for all families in the area. I have now experienced a few times what it is like to be without water for a long time and I have discovered that the necessity of life is number 1."
The well on Yaya's compound is broken since a major storm hit the area. Now he no longer has a source of water. He hauls jerry cans full of water that the neighbors let him tap, but that is hard work and of course it is never enough. As a result, trees are withering or standing fruitless. Just like Yaya, we are aware of the great importance of nature, trees and biodiversity. That is why we are so enthusiastic about what he does and how he passes things on to the younger generation in The Gambia.
We want to help Yaya and his neighbourhood with this crowdfunding. The best solution for the water supply is a borehole, with which groundwater can be pumped up from a depth where it is always available. It is also safer and more durable than the well he had.
There will be a tap on the outside of the fence where people from the neighborhood can tap water at all times!
