Centre for African Justice, Peace and Human rights is a non-profit foundation based in The Hague municipality in The Netherlands. For more information about us, we invite you to visit our website via.http://centreforafricanjustice.org/
Our Right to Quality Education Team is made up of young legal professionals and human rights activists who believe that education is an arm of fundamental human rights and as a result, invest their intellectual and material resources in finding out how children in rural areas in developing countries can have quality education in a healthy and sanitized environment.
Through our right to education programme we have partnered with the Merit Healthier Schools Initiative based in Uganda Kisoro district. We are together working on a project to improve the health and learning environment of 940 pupils in Matinza Primary School. We plan to achieve this goal by renovating their existing sanitation, increasing their latrine coverage, and providing them with clean drinkable water as the first phase of the project.
Matinza primary school is a community founded and government aided school established in 1956 under the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Republic of Uganda. The school is located in South - western Uganda, Kigezi sub-region, Kisoro district, Nyakabande subcounty, and Rwingwe parish approximately 12 km south of Kisoro town and 550 km from Kampala the capital city of Uganda.
Currently the school has an enrollment of 934 pupils and 19 qualified teachers translating into a teacher to pupil ratio of 1:49. This teacher pupil ratio is lower than the 1:35 teacher to pupil ratio recommended by the Ministry of Education and Sports of Uganda. The school performance has remained poor for the past ten years which we attribute among others to the bad learning environment due to poor school infrastructure.
Matinza primary school has had many years of neglect of school infrastructure resulting in deterioration of the classroom environment and sanitation facilities which contributes to ill health and consequently poor academic performance of the pupils. Although the school receives government grants, the funds may not have been enough to meet their needs. As result, the school has dilapidated classroom infrastructure, inadequate latrine facilities and lacks water for drinking, handwashing and general hygiene.
In order to create a safe and healthy environment for students, especially in these times that the community is also fighting the spread of Covid-19, we need to raise money to repair the non-functioning toilet facilities, and provide clear drinkable water to students in the school. In order to improve water, sanitation and hygiene at Matinza Primary School we need to raise
8662Euros. With your donation we plan to achieve the following goals.
Renovate the existing 3 old latrines with 11 stances.
Hand washing facilities
Establish a rain water harvesting system including gutters on all class room blocks, connecting pipes and 2 rain water storage tanks with water taps.
Establish a school health committee and pupils led school health club.
Establish pupil-led school eco -green environment club at the school.
By assisting the school with their sanitation and water problem we will be helping 443 boys and 491 girls including 19 teachers and community members who have access to the school to have improved health and hygiene within the school. Most of the girls in the school have to miss school every month during their menstrual periods due to the lack of clean water and better sanitation at the school. Please help us in providing this much needed toilet/washroom, and drinkable water facilities to these kids. With the current Covid-19 crisis their lives depends on this.
Please remember, every cent goes a long way
Thank you
