Water Kiosk at Sokoni Primary School in Kenya
Tax deductible
Background:
In Kenya, just 1/3 of the population has access to clean water. Among the water provided, water kiosks make up around 23% of water vendors and provide the most affordable option for local communities. Children are often tasked with getting clean water for their families, which results in missing school or being too tired to focus on school. We believe that access to reliable, sustainable water and including the community is crucial to making a difference.
A Water Kiosk at School, an International Tranformation Foundation and Join the Pipe Foundation project, holds a unique and honorable mission that is twofold: to serve and empower the youth of Africa through business experience by providing rural communities with access to affordable, clean drinking water. Since beginning in November of 2013, A Water Kiosk at School has benefitted 4,815 students and 73,087 people from ten kiosks across ten different schools. Each kiosk is built on the grounds of a local, primary school and taps into its water supply in order to sell the water to community members.
This is a primary-school-based project where students manage the business of selling clean tap water to community residents at an affordable price. The kiosk is both an educational and profitable business, teaching students valuable entrepreneurial skills and generating much needed income for schools. Extra income is both redeployed to a neighboring school and used for activities such as buying toilet paper, maintaining the kiosk, and improving the quality of sanitation and education.
This project:
We are raising money to build a water kiosk at Sokoni Primary School in Nyegna, Kenya. Sokoni has 345 students and was established in 1985 by the community to end clan feuds. Today, schoolchildren have to travel 7 kilometers to the nearest lake to get water, tiring them out and making them miss school and/or not be able to learn as well. The kiosk will benefit the 250-300 surrounding households. All of these funds will go to the organization and the creation of this kiosk, including labor, materials, community events, and travel.
