Buy A Water Supply Pump For A Village

Donation protected
Hello,

I'm Ian and live in Queensland, Australia.
I’m asking you to help me buy a village a water pump, a tank and the necessary pipes.

The village is in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea and its called the Baiyer River Village. It is located about an hour and a half by rough road from the town of Mt Hagen, itself an isolated place and a rough and ready town.

The village people are poor and without opportunity to better their situation.

The big problem is that there is no functioning economy in the highlands.

There’s no way to generate income as there are no crops they can sell out of the area and no tourism, so almost no money comes into the village. There appear to be no government services except the school; not even a postal service (no one has an address anyway) but there is a mobile phone service.

One of the many fixable problems the villagers face is a lack of a water supply. Carrying water up out of a gully is a daily chore and hard work, especially in hot weather.

I’d appreciate your help to buy the village a water pump and at least one storage tank.

Specifically, I’m looking to buy an Australian-made Bunyip Pump which will suck water from a nearby stream and pump it to a tank up a hill. This pump runs by the pressure of water flowing down a pipe into the pump and it requires no fuel as it is 'self powered', similar to a 'Ram' pump. It also requires little maintenance.

From the central tank, additional tanks could be connected in the future, depending on funds, water volume and draw off from the first tank.

This simple yet effective system will alleviate the daily burden of carrying water up from a gully.

This is a typical water spout that uses water diverted from a creek to make it accessible. This is one of the villages water supply points...it's in everyday use. The problem is, it's down in a gully.

I am aiming for a cheap, basic water supply for now, but one that might be expanded in future. The villagers are well capable of installing the pump and already have a plan for its ongoing maintenance.

It is very common for people to stand on the roadside trying to sell anything they can. A few home grown banana's are not worth much but it's all she's got.
This a small local market where people buy and sell a few of the odds and ends to each other.
In this photo young men carry water up from the creek to their homes.

Carrying water uphill is not a productive way to spend time and a water supply will make life easier and slowly start a few better things happening.

This a diagram of how the water supply will work.

Please be part of this and make a donation towards the cost of a water pump via this, our official GoFundMe page.

A water pump will have a direct and positive impact on the villager's daily lives.

You can see something of village life on the Facebook Page:

The hospitality my friends and I received when we stayed in the village was warm and friendly and we got to visit their neighbours and friends, all of whom welcomed us into their families. I hope you can spare a a donation to make life a little easier for the people of the village. The people might be poor but they are just like you and me. They do their best to look after their families and friends and make a living. Imagine if you had nothing. I'm sure you'd appreciate a helping hand.
Thank you.
Ian.
